United Kingdom 2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Manual Zermatt SilverDiscovery 3

....or focus on the word 'usually' in the statement above....
it all comes down to which would be the most productive use of time & money - neither option would be 'free' Sad

I take it from the price it was an E60 5 series? In this case there's an awrful lot of talk about BMW being able to pinpoint the car from the sat nav and the built in phone. All E60/61's have built in phones that you can not dial from other than if you press the button to contact customer services in which case it calls them. You as the customer do not know the number. There is also an sos button and crash sensor that calls the emergency services via the BMW call centre who can pin point your location from the sat nav transponder to direct the emergency services or breakdown service to you. It was all part of a subscription package that was free for the first year called BMW Assist. Whether you subscribe or not BMW still have the ability to pinpoint the car but said they would not do it without Police crime numbers etc in case it was a jealous wife looking for her husband! If the Police called them you may be in luck. If it's an E39 then ignore all the rubbish I just wrote.

the fact that a car is stolen every 3 seconds in the UK.

this is of no help but seeing as you have a lot of cars stolen and the D3 being a large investment I was just curious to know if you any of guys have installed a remotely operated imobiliser (with sattelite tracking to within say 10 metres) and are they available with the D3 electronics. Have seen some on British shows used for Beamers and the like and how effective are they.

out of luck

Paul

Just spoke with BMW. What you say is pretty much correct but the pinpointing process is user activated, either by pressing the alarm button or by crashing the car. It cannot be used to locate the car from a central point like Tracker.

In any case, I didn't spec BMW Assist with my car so have no chance anyhow.

Thanks for the idea though...

Hi Owl

The chap came to my house and I'm assuming he's part of a gang. So, I won't be taking him on anytime soon - that's what the police can do for me (I hope).

I am getting a Tracker fitted to the D3 from Sextons at Swindon. The base retrieve model costs £300 installed so is a no-brainer after what I've been through.

They can activate it on 06 model cars so it may be worth trying someone else at BMW to see if they can do it. Apparantly nothing has changed between your model 03 and 06 except it's not publicised and the legal implications were not sorted. BMW assist is on your car but you did not take the subscription out but the internals are on all cars with sat nav.
Try again you never know! Also as it has a built in phone as I already mentioned that you can not use unless you are calling customer services then BMW will have the phone number. The customer does not know the phone number but if your car had the sos button then it has the phone. In turn the Police can find out from a cell site survey where the phone is as it would be switched on when the car was turned on. This in turn costs a fair few quid and the Police only really use it for life and death due to the cost.
Never know though if you can find out the number and you call Vodaphone/Orange or whoever BMW use begging they may take pity and give the Police the info. If you keep nagging you will eventually find a solution to most problems. Of course in your area the Police may consider it important enough to pay the cash out.

There's got to be a techy in BMW somewhere that will know how to do this, the trouble is that the chaps at BMW customer care probably don't know how to locate such a "guru".

Should this whole thread not be sent to one/all of the excellent BMW forums to get their 'expert' opinion, they may just know that techy....

Hi Paul

I spoke to the service team at HR Owen where the car came from. They insist that there's nothing on the car to help. Not sure where to go from here.....

Thx again,

I have an E39 5 series at present (until tomorrow....) and plug into the boards quite regularly.

Nikko, I will PM both the good boards over to you when I get home, that is if you haven't already contacted them.
