Sat Nav reads an old original LR DVD but not a newer one!
My 2006 HSE has a working Sat Nav unit it I use the 2005 original DVD in it.
If I put either of the two newer ones (Ebay) in I get really spurious results, like it will read the DVD but almost immediately not read it! Leave it the unit and you can here it ticking (searching) away and then suddenly you have a map on the screen showing the correct location, only disappear seconds later.
I drove around and when it did show a map it was exactly in the location! Sitting at the traffic lights the map is there and then it goes with the insert a MAP DVD in message, another mile or so down the road and you notice that the map is back and then goes!
Putting the original genuine LR DVD (2005) in I have continuous maps, no problem!
I bought a DVD cleaner disc which it recognises as not a Map DVD! But that has made no difference in getting it to read the two Ebay DVD maps consistently.
Anybody of the electronic genius types out there who can offer some thoughts?
Maybe the laser is getting a bit old, but why can it still read the original DVD without a problem?
I'd rather not spend a fortune on a repair or replacement if necessary.
Maybe I've just been unlucky with the Ebay DVDs?
Best

Back to genuine disc and no issues

I've been running a eBay purchased disc for over a year without issue, initial boot up of the disc did take some time.... But all good since.
It will be a cheap disc, get a good make disc and make a copy, and burn it real slow.

Have a search on Google for a guy called Rusty. Have had several discs off him for different cars and always work superbly. My neighbour got one for his D3 and works perfectly in UK and Europe.2006 TdV6 HSE.
Hi Batfink, found Rusty using Google and one has been ordered, should arrive tomorrow.
I am extremely suspicious of the two DVDs from the Ebay seller as neither reads cleanly into my computer and thus can't burn a new one even slowly'!
I'm just hoping that the Rusty one is as good as the reviews says they are.

Have used an Audi and a BMW disc from him and both worked fautlessly plus unlike a lot of places any problems and he will always sort it out. He trades mostly on his reputation and has always been highly regarded as the go to sat nav guy by many car forums.
I would quite happily pay double what he charges for discs as you know they will always work but dont tell him I said that 2006 TdV6 HSE.

Cheeky question....
Can you let me know if it has the new forth bridge on the maps (beside ediburgh) ?
My disc arrived from Rusty, but sadly it too is showing problems.
When I put it in I get the message 'insert MAP DVD' eventually it does show a map, BUT when you try to change the default country Belgium it comes up with an error.
I ran Rusty who was most helpful and has offered to send another not quite so new map DVD in case it is the amount of data having to be crammed onto theDVD.
My factory 2005 Land Rover disc does work!
Though today after putting a cleaner disc in it too came up with a Error reading the DVD!
So I am coming to the conclusion, being a 2005/6 unit and probably has been used to within an inch of its life, (the car has done 191,000 miles) that it has a failing laser or that the mechanism is becoming a bit lethargic.
So finding a good secondhand one will be my next quest.

In all seriousness Ian, inbuilt satnav's are not really worth bothering with. There are many cheaper apps for your phone that work much better. Even google maps will give you up-to-date traffic for free Dave

I’m going to guess it’s the read head tracking that’s the problem. When you say it’s working on the old disk I bet your always at the same location or area. I suspect all the data is in one area on the disk that has been used repeatedly. Have you been anywhere quite different recently?
Put in a new disc and that data is somewhere else on the disc. The drive mechanism is simply unable to track to that new location. Could be the burn quality is below the threshold of the drive now.
Make an ISO copy of your old disc and burn that and see if an identical copy works.
Then do as suggested do a slow burn of a copy of the new disc. That might just get your drive up and running.Current : Discovery 4 HSE (2012 spec)

Agreed regarding the unit on both counts but, and there is always a but, with the last D3 HSE I had the inbuilt sat nav, for all its failings, took me to the correct address in Portugal where TomTom insisted the house was 5 kms away!
Not fun when you have been driving for hours and just want to get to the correct destination where friends are waiting with a glass of wine!
So I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Navteq system even if it a bit clunky, and that's putting it mildly, that you can't add POIs or even show you your speed to compare with the speedo are just some of those failings!
It just seems a bit of a waste using the screen as a sucker point for the TomTom!
Having said that the Audi system I have on the A5 doesn't accept the full post code, and that is lunacy!
