No idea what that's about.....
Sorry, it was quite a storm in the electronics community at the end of last year. FTDI sent out an automatic update that would deliberately brick any chip that it thought was not an original authentic FTDI chip. Equipment all over the world suddenly stopped working overnight. The corporate scorched-earth policy probably seemed like a good idea in the boardroom but it backfired badly and FTDI's reputation crashed overnight, despite the public apologies.

I have just ordered the cables to connect the FBH to the OBD socket from the site store last night, I didn't see this bad boy!! how much are they?
My FBH is Inop and I would very much like to get it working,

I have sneaked on here from a Land Rover forum as somebody suggested there is a wealth of knowledge on here.
I have 3 Webasto heaters all of which are unknown, 1 is from a BMW 7s, 1 from a Peugeot 807 and finally 1 from a Rover 75. All appear similar (all are Thermo Top C) and I have tried to use the diagnostic software on all 3 of them. The only on that responds is the BMW and I can read the spec and stored fault codes. The other 2 just hang on the "Initialisation" page. I have tried setting the device to W-Bus and also the Rover and Peugeot settings but no luck. The BMW one responds on the W-Bus so I know the software and OBDII are working fine.
The plan is to try and get a least one working and then fit it to the Land Rover.
Any help from somebody who can guide me with the software/diagnosis would be much appreciated.

Have you tried all the ThermoTop C or C/Z options in the Device Selection menu?06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Great thread.
I connected the FBH in the way here described. The PC gave COM10 to the USB port and the Webasto Software accepted it. Although very little flickering lights on the connector.
I changed the COM to 2, that was free. Also as here described.
I'm making one of these up to replace the rather heath arrangement I currently have. (actually I'm making 2)
Anyway bought a new USB KKL adapter, breakout box (ODB2 shop is a pain only accepting BACS transfer) and some probes etc and made it up this evening.
And with the orginal WTT software V2.10 (Or the later V2.14) I can't get it to see my heater.
Tried with my original lead - and that doesn't work either
One (older one) has the FTDI chipset and the other the CH340G chip.
At the weekend, or before if I get the chance, I'll get my old lashup out of the draw and try that - because that did work.Mark.

Great post and write up. Super clear.
Just to be clear though, this way there's no need to find a way through the bulkhead to tap into the OBD port inside the car is there?
Does your OBD break out cable idea bypass that requirement and therefore all that's needed is the OBD adaptor cable, back probes, a K line usb adaptor from the forum shop (my laptop only has USB), WTT software and a laptop?VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

If the off-the-shelf diagnostic looms in the site shop don’t do it for you let me know and I can do a custom build or variation for you 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Thanks Martin. That's good to know. I'm trying to avoid having to tap into the OBD inside the car, leaving a loose wire in the engine bay when diagnostics are not being run. I have the webasto timer connected permanently in pin 2 (I think), so would need to swap the webasto's red wire out for the OBD splice to run diagnostics. The loom method means leaving this wire from the OBD disconnected near the FBH when the webasto is connected most of the time.
Robbie's approach sounds like the least diy method and if I understand correctly all connections are made outside the car local to the FBH itself. Then when I'm done diagnosing, the testing kit can be removed and the webasto reconnected, returning everything to the way it was. Plus I won't have to thread and join any cables. I'm easily defeated when electronics and fine motor skills need to be combined.VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

These are both cheap and worked great with no issues.
