Do you really have to remove the turbo to replace the CPS? |
|
Hi all, so my 2008 TDV6 Disco 3 needs its CPS replacing, no worries I thought, I have done them on other cars, just unbolt it, bolt the new one in, plug the cable in, away you go, 10 min job.
But of course that would be way too easy for Land Rover…….. No, the sadistic, mechanic hating engineers at Land Rover thought ‘let’s bury it behind the turbo, and then put a suspension arm in front of that just to make sure it’s an all day job. Just to replace a £50 part.
Has anyone on here had to do one of these before, any advice before I make a start on this adventure of pain and mild annoyance?

You need to remove the NSF wheel, turbo support bracket, plastic bung then a long Torx25 bit with a UJ on it, then a long 1/4 drive extension. The set screw is captive on the sensor, pull it out by the short harness, rotate 180 degrees when you get to the edge of the casting, then out.
Try to 'set' the position of the new sensor to the same angle as the old one on the harness and be careful to not cross-thread the set screw.
Also helps if you've not done 'several' to tape all the 1/4 drive joints together so you don't drop anything inside. From memory I was doing them in about 40 mins when there was a service action on them (2017 I think).

You my man are an absolute Legend!
Thank-you very much for your help!
Was about to order gaskets for the turbo, so saved me £30 there already!

Its a lot easier if you can get the vehicle to a height where you are 'eye-to-eye' with the turbo, bending / crouching down just puts your body at the wrong angle to keep everything in line.
As has been mentioned, it's not a difficult job, just fiddly, take your time and if you're struggling to get the new one in the right position, go and have a brew, let your muscles (and head!) relax for a bit.
If you put some tape across the UJ, it'll make it less floppy and easier to 'steer' into the set screw - make sure you have a good LED torch as well, oh, and put some Duck oil (or other preferred penetrating oil) on the support bracket fasteners the night before.

It also helps to put a tiny smear of grease on the CPS where the guide lugs are to help ease it in. Joe

I hereby elect myself to ask a question that I suspect I'm not alone in thinking about ...
What is the CPS ?
And I have checked the acronyms list in the Wiki and it doesn't get listed ... so it's either so flipping obvious or so obscure but I can't figure it out.

Once I'd thought Crown Prosecution Service, I couldn't come up with any car related answers. .

Camshaft is CMP
Probably both Ford-ism's...
I knew what the OP was talking about because of the location and translated the CPS into CKP subconsciously - well, I think I did!
