pitted alloy wheels

Has anyone had any problems with their alloys?. As mine has rough spots/pitted marks and the shiny finish coming off on all four alloys..

your lucky, message from dealer said that the people that deal with warranty would not do anything till it got a lot worse which is a typical poor response as other owners like golf and lexus was changed no questions asked.

I agree fat bloke, I get the impression that L/R are getting more reluctant to replace things like this under their so called warranty, that is meant to cover lapses in manufacturing quality, It's just not good enough, keep on at em. Good Luck. Smile

I think a lot of it depends on the attitude of your dealer.
I recently had all 4 of my alloys replaced as the silver finish was patchy in places.
When my dealer (not supplying dealer) 1st looked at them they said nothing wrong, when I got them to look at bit closer and compare them to others of the same kind a new set was on order within 10 mins.

I had too much scratches on my rims cause of Sand/Rock driving and the dealer said that they cannot change the rims under the warranty since it's only for manufacturing faults.. Bad luck that I damaged my own wheels, But nothing that I cannot live with it Smile

Fat Bloke, have you had any joy over your pitted alloys? I have just noticed a bit of the silver finish (about the size of my thumb) which is flaking away from the very edge of the rim on one of my alloys. I haven't approached the dealer yet (and always get a not again type look when I do!!!)

Customer service seems a bit hit and miss, I have had a bit of a battle getting misted up headlights replaced even though as stated in the service bulletin, water droplets on the inside of the lense are in the unacceptable range. They have agreed to do the replacement but only as a "good will" gesture!!! is the waranty that they provide for the car based on good will now?

I think the only good will present should concern whether or not I replace this Disco with another LR product.

Trying to claim under warranty

I am trying to get Land Rover to replace my five alloys under warranty as they are heavily pitted and won't clean up any more.

They are blaming me and have said that I shouldn't have used alloy wheel cleaner on my alloy wheels. Ehh?

Have written to the MD of Land Rover in case I can get any further.

Very poor quality alloy wheel paint finish. Better finish on my wife's Ford Focus alloys.

I'd speak to trading standards and don't mess about. It seems to me to be quite common amongst all makes, my mates AMG has just had a wheel replaced and I know of several Tuscons and Sorentos that have had them replaced too. Show LR you aren't going to mess about and I'm sure you will get it sorted.

Can'y think what to do if they don't pay up and replace them. Any one know what it costs to have the existing alloys sripped down and repainted properly?

I had the alloy wheels on my last Discovery blasted and powder coated at a cost of £45 per wheel. The guys made a lovely job of them, but warned me NOT to use alloy wheel cleaner on them, as all alloy wheel cleaners are acidic and will (depending on how often you use it) damage the coating. They advised using only hot soapy water and then a protective coating of wax.

Wheel cleaner - is basically brick acid and water with little else.

I know a few valet boys who make their own having been on a course and seeing what the professional stuff is made of, and I agree it is bad for your wheels - but have you tried washing brake dust off with soap ???

Out of interest my D2 ES Alloys where pretty much perfect after 4 years & 85k miles, apart from knocks scuffs & dings from usage - not bad - hopefully the D3 HSE ones will be the same ?

Yes I have, MANY times. Its certainly not easy, but I would rather do that than damage the coating with acid. What I do find however is that the brake dust, dirt etc comes off easier if the wheels are polished with wax or even better Toughseal Alloy Wax. Not a very pleasant job to do, but once done it makes cleaning the wheels a lot easier.
