Saw my first one on the M6 today sat on a coach on the way back from Southampton
Spotted it immediately BECAUSE of the offset plate Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

It's an interesting one this, there are a lot of vehicles with rear facing, offset, rectangular plates. Every one that I can think of has it for a practical reason; is the D5 unique in doing it for cosmetic reasons alone?

The rear of all three of those look better.
I have finally seen a D5 on the road, last Thursday when returning from Gatwick. Although it was a bit of an odd one as it was a 65 plate with camouflage on the bumpers and c pillar.Andy

I don't think it looks any more out of place than those that choose to have a regular plate on the back of the D3/4.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Ive seen about 3 or 4 this last weekend up here. Two of the orange ones and a couple of the grey ones. All looked superb.

I don't think it looks out of place at all. Considering that McGovern designed it to be a link to previous Discovery design, I thought that he'd had the D3/4 in mind. However, maybe he was trying to regain the original's strong visual link to a contemporary light commercial vehicle

It does make it instantly recognisable. I have seen a few on my travels now. I usually spot them coming the other way, and a quick glance in the mirror confirms a 5. Also now I've seen a few, the roofline instantly gives it away.
What I am thinking though, are the dealers fitting larger rear plates than standard? Like the old Rover 75 rear plate that was shaped to fit the gap it fitted in?

I was wondering if the dealers will consider a custom shaped rear plate too. You see some RRS1's with them.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I was thinking of buying a cherished number that has just 3 characters and making a short plate, I reckon some of the photos of the car with smaller foreign plates look better.
The rules are probably quite strict on font and size of character, but I think there are options on the size of the background.

The typeface and it's size is set in stone, although "3D" is an option. Apart from a need for a border around the letters of at least 11mm, there is no restriction on how much larger than 11mm you go.

That pic further up god thread of J77's rear end ( ) looks like the border is much more than 11 MM.

LR have always fitted an oversize rear plate, Evoque, Freelander 2, DS all have over size plates

All the Discovery models had off-setumber plates and the stepped roof line. I think this is continued to separate the Disco models from the RangeRover cars.
Could it be that LR employed designers locally from Talbot and carried the stepped roof line over from the Talbot Matra Rancho onto the Jay project:?:In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Down and out's Velar
