Allianz is getting tight on their warranty, wouldn't do an exchange transmission even. wanted it sent away to fixed which takes much longer. Said if I continued to drive it and it failed they would refuse the claim.

Visited a recommended WA Disco Indy today as I try and sort out where to service my car in WA. It was purchased in VIC and has been dealer serviced since new.
The next service is the end of warranty service.
Regarding the Extended Warranty the Indy said he does not see enough failures in the cars he services to justify it (a good plug for his servicing skills). Most often when he does see a problem it is poor maintenance related.
He reckons the Disco 3s have gotten better through the MYs. He is now seeing them with 150,000km+ with minimal troubles - when properly maintained.
My takeaway is that if after the 3yr LR warranty + a 3yr Extended Warranty you are still going to be under 100,000kms it is probably a low risk of major failure.
His view is that the approx $3000 Extended Warranty money is better spent on better preventative maintenance for better long term result if the car is a keeper. In particular, he is of the view that the tranny oil change should be done before 80,000km vs the LR after 10 years. He has developed this approach after seeing various driveability / shuddering issues that have been corrected by this approach.
Food for thought........at the end of the day it is all a matter of risk.
Remembering that the Extended Warranty does not cover brakes and other consumables the $3k is already in your back pocket if something goes wrong - hoping it is not the 'big one'.

I just had my front ball joints and bushes and tie rods bushes done after 60,000Km and 3 years of NO off road driving. Dealer said it is not uncommon as the cars are SO heavy/hard on the front suspension and that these will need doing every 3 years or so! Thankfully Alliance extended warranty covered the A$1280 bil ($580 laboput and $490 parts plus gst)
So, I say again WATCH out those who put bullbars and winches etc up front regards

Interesting. This does not help my decision as unless you get another repair of the same size you can claim there is still little benefit in the Extended Warranty.
The EW is really peace of mind for a 'show-stopper' engine or gearbox failure.
What were the symptoms of your failed ball joints? You must have been only just out of LR warranty?
In the recent thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic31160-15.html there is a discussion of the ball joints being updated in later models to much stronger units. I wonder in what year they were updated and if your replacement was with the updated units?

Hi PD,
My car has 53,000Km on the clock and ran out of the LR warranty in April (it is a MY07 model). Due to work commitments and being 4 hours away from the dealer I couldn't manage to get it in prior to the expiry of the LR warranty but Alliance took it over and paid the $1230. I don't know if LR would have done it despite being notified of the issue prior to running out of warranty? So I still have almost 2 years of extended warranty left and although fingers crossed nothing else will go wrong I am very happy with Alliance and their product (I paid $1960 for it btw).
I had noticed a 'knocking' noise from the front when going over bumps.
They found "lower control arm bushes and ball joints and OS tie rod knocking"
The following were replaced:
2 x ball joints $66.30 each
2 x bush arm fronts $19.58 each
2 x bush arm front $60.60 each
4 x bolts $9.32 each
4 x M16 self locking nurs $4.56 each
4 x washers $6.85 each
1 x tie rod $47.84 regards

Dream on ! 5 grand for my front diff at 33000km on LRA warranty . You need to think about either
a EW or buying something else altogether . There's hardly a damn thing on these
that won't cost you 2500 or more with labour . I suggest you do a bit more research,
because wishful thinking counts for nothin' ! The component quality is trash , and a spot
of ZF oil isn't going to make a blind bit of difference to the rest of the vehicle.

Neil that sounds very excessive, i had mine changed by Alto Landrover in Atarmon less than a year ago under the Allianz Policy and the copy of the bill i have is $2000 dollars including labour another Pommie from the darkside

I wonder if the horror stories are equally shared with RRS and RR owners?
In the 6 months or so before I bought my D3 I asked everyone I knew who had a D3 / RRS / RR and could not find one unhappy owner. None of them had a bad word to say. I went so far as to asking anyone I saw in the shopping centre car park or at the kids sport ground with a D3 and again never a bad word or major problem mentioned!
Maybe there is a lemon-filter for D3s sold over in the West (doesn't help me as I bought mine in Melbourne).

Neil, sorry i have left the majority of paperwork in our lock up in Sydney, just moved up to the Whitsundays for 6 months 8) The vehicle was in for a day as i remember, for the diff and a few other bits and bobs, so assume it could have been anything from 3-6 hours. I noticed on the remaining Alto invoices i have is that they do not actually put down the hours where it is LR warranty, most things have a zero value against them  , i clearly remember the Front Diff one, as it was my first claim on Allianz and i noted that it actually recovered the cost of the policy  another Pommie from the darkside

 its PD's call, if he wants to save 3K now and take the risk that is his choice.. personally however it is not an option i would take owning any large expensive toy , especially if there is any option that someone else is going to warrant it if things do break, everyone to their own i suppose
