Heated mirror logic

Can someone please explain the logic for the heater mirrors?

Rain drops on the mirrors don't get heated off using either front or rear window heat.

Does the car need to think its actually raining ie auto sensor detecting or wipers on?

On any car I have had, heated mirrors only remove mist and frost for which they are designed. In most cars I have known, they come on with other window demisters, therefore at low temperatures. I do not think the heat is sufficient to evaporate rain which is generally at higher environmental temperatures. The same priciple applies to both front and rear heated windows for which the rmedy for rain, is obviously the wipers.

My Audi A8 would remove raindrops pretty well, you could see the vapour coming off no problem.

The D4 seem very reluctant to remove misting, no real frost so far.... Wink

Ive found the mirrors on all the land rovers ive had with them to be great at clearing what they are meant to - frost mist, not rain.

Thanks gents, however we are getting away from my question:

How is the electric heating triggered?

that's easy - its linked to the rear window demister, has for ever... and the washerjet heaters.

This is how they work

Quote:
Exterior Mirrors

Heating

The CJB receives the ambient air temperature value from the ECM (engine control module) on the high speed CAN (controller area network) bus. The CJB converts the ambient air temperature value to an on-time percentage and transmits it on the medium speed CAN bus to the two door modules, which then energize the exterior mirror heating elements accordingly. The on-time percentage is increased while the windshield wipers are on.

On vehicles with the parked heating function, exterior mirror heating may also operate when the parked heating function is active, depending on the ambient air temperature.

Im sure there were on the sport - I remember pressing the button to defrost the mirrors in the snow on the sport, same as the sport before and the D1 and D2?

It cant have been a coincidence

They operate independently on the D4 Smile

Quote:
Heated windshield switch: Energizes the windshield heater for a set time period, until the switch is pressed again or until the engine stops, whichever occurs first. An amber LED in the switch is illuminated while the heater is on.

Heated rear window switch: Enabled only with the engine running. Pressing the switch energizes the rear window heater for a set time period, until the switch is pressed again or until the engine stops, whichever occurs first. An amber LED in the switch is illuminated while the heater is on.

Excellent stuff DG - exactly what I was looking for Thumbs Up

I thought it was far too simple to be just directly on with the rear window element.

Clever stuff but more to go wrong...... Laughing

on my car (although not a LR product) it's on the mirror controls, ie the same as turn the nob for left or right and then juggle the nob to move mirrors into desired position, also on that nob is position to park the mirror and next point is turn heat on Whistle
