Green "Lights-on" indicator on 2005
Since updating the firmware on my Instrument Pack to get the "three flash indictor" & "clock on the dash" on my 2005 D3 I’ve had the red FBH LED when the lights are on. No biggie I know, but I kept an eye on eBay & managed to pick up an allegedly non-working, later version of the instrument cluster (the one with a green lights-on indicator) for a few quid.
This morning after watching the Powerful UK video at: http://youtu.be/Kr3yACRySq0 about a 2005 RRS instrument cluster strip down, I thought I’d have a bash at getting a green lights-on indicator on mine.
So first off - disconnect the battery & took out the instrument cluster (video for the RRS one at: http://youtu.be/0twlR5nXoRU).
With both mine & the eBay instrument cluster on the bench I set to work. First off was to open both up & take pictures of where the needles were at rest on mine. Then took the the needles off both instrument clusters with the two teaspoon method & release the circuit boards.
Looking at the two black gauge sheets (not quite sure what to call them), mine being an early version has two Park Brake warning symbols:
where as the newer version has this:
So I didn't think it would be right to just swap the two gauge sheets over so to remove the FBH symbol:
I simply cut the FBH symbol out & also the lights-on symbol from the newer one:
Then three dots of superglue:
& the light-on symbol is in place (not the neatest job I know, but it is covered by the bezel):
Then it's onto getting the colour right. The LED's that provide the light to the symbols are simply soldered at each side so a quick touch with the iron & they're free (keeping it quick so as not to melt the LED casing). Obviously noting which way they're aligned before removing them - looking from the top you can see a Y shape inside - tried taking a photo but it's too small. With the LED replaced it looked like this (not my best soldering, but it illuminates the symbol just fine):
So now it's just a case of putting it back together:
Then back to the car for a quick test:
Before putting the dash back together:
Happy days (well nights!)

Surely at night you would see if your lights were on or not
Seems a lot of work to find out,
But well done and a good write up with clear pictures.

Very nice!
Going to have to scour the breakers yards now. That'd be awesome to get this working. Thanks for putting the work in.

At night yes, but at dusk, in rain, in a tunnel

BTW, I've done the same mod on mine Clive

good write up and instructions, but alot of work when you can just look at where the light switch is pointing or whether there is light coming from the front of your car!!
Do the later cars have an LED saying when the FBH is active then? My 2005 doesn't seem to tell meCurrent: D3 TDV6 S; GGAT's, DIY 7inch Tablet mount, DIY Reversing Camera, Stage 1 remap, EGR delete
Previous: Freelander TD4, D2 V8, D1 TDI, Series 3 Petrol plus Numerous performance cars!
The earlier cars had the LED and indicator to show when the programmed park heater was running, this was disabled by software upgrades as it wasn't reliable, and the position in the clocks replaced with a lights on indicator in later models

Does the FBH light up when the FBH is running, basically no
It was meant to in the original design when the D3 was launched, as was park heating, controlled from within the settings menu, but it never worked, so as soon as the car went into a dealer for a service the software was 'upgraded' to remove the functionality Never get mad - get even !!

Now now calm down folks,
This bloke ( Landie 71 )
Has taken a lot of time and effort to do this mod to his beloved D3
I only commented because in my honest opinion I thought it was a lot of work to find out if your lights were on.
I'm not knocking him for his enthusiasm, far from it, wish I had the knowledge to do things like this

Ah crap...... I really want to do this on mine now !!!
Where did you get the new LED from and do you have any details for it?
Cheers.... still learning )
Isofix car seat, Isofix baby seat base, crushed carpet crisps, sticky leather seats (next to Isofix car seat), upgraded front rubber cup holder things, wired up USB charge and audio for my iphone, side steps, de-tango'd lights, H7 OSRAM Nighbreakers, LED side lights, LED reverse lights, clear repeaters, Narpy Grill... tools I don't know how to use.... yet..
Good write up
For those that are saying that it's a lot of work to see if the headlights are on.... I think you'll find that Landie71 could tell his lights were on before he started this mod, by simply looking for the annoying RED led Personally I haven't doen the clock on dash update simply because I know that the red led will drive me round the ing twist. If and when I find a instrument pack from a later D3, and the time to do this I'd change it over and then do the clock on dash update

Thanks all - didn't think I'd stir up so much interest with my little project, but it good to read.
Think I actually echo the though that it is quite a bit of work for what it is, but it's one of the sorts of tinkering I like doing. As my brother said my mentality is: "If it's broke - fix it, if it isn't - improve it", quite observant really. Anybody worried about offending - nothing to worry about
I did try using an ordinary 3mm LED before swapping the original LED over by just piggy-backing it to the original one:
& then covering over the original with a couple of layers of black sparky tape:
This didn't play ball, hence swapping the original LED over. After putting the car back together I did a bit more digging & found the 3mm LED I had in was actually a 12v version (integral resistor) & the feed from the board was at 2.0v it didn't would't work. In principle though I still think this should work using something like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/3mm-green-led-wl33l.
Now next "improve it" idea - as I've got the FBH symbol cut out, I did notice that at the bottom left & bottom right of the dash there is an unused indicator "tube" on the white plastic frame - now do I find the water pump supply on the FBH & wire up a red 3mm LED to that & stick the FBH symbol on it......

Can anyone find a source of the lights on legends to do a group buy? I think the ones shown in the link are just stickers?

Cracking job there Landie
What soldering iron did you use as I'm sure others would like to know. It's really quite tricky to do without the right iron. Most people would have a big std soldering iron and put too much heat into the led.Bodsys Brake Bible
