Genltemen... could you advise me please?
Mine is a 4.4 v8 petrol with a sqeak at the front. I am almost sure it is the "cooling fan belt tensioner". Is the bearing the same as described above and can anyone explain which is the primary and which is the secondary belt? one is accessory & the other cooling fan.
Many thanks indeed. David

Great write up
If replacing the whole tensioner is it best to replace the bolt as well? Also any know the torque? Club Narpy Torch

The pdf below should explain all with regards to the 4.4L petrol V8.
If there is anything that perhaps should be replaced when doing the belts is something called the deflection pulley, item 7 on the exploded view. There is an upgrade version of it now available.

Thank you very much bbyer for those last posts. Great pics and diagrams..
I will acquire a replacement pulley, change the bearing on the secondary tensioner and if it still sqeaks it has to be the allternator!
Thanks again.

I know that this is an old post but can I just clarify if this job can be done without removing the radiator? I would have thought that you could access the tensioner from underneath the vehicle, after removing the protective trays?

Yes the tensioner is accessible from underneath by removing just the fwd panel, (not the sump plate),no need to remove the radiator, or the viscous fan for that matter tbh. D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Well, it took me about 2 hours to cobble a spanner together to hold the pulley. Two light taps and off came the fan. I,m glad I ordered the lower tensioner as mine is a bit iffy to say the least. Cuppa now waiting for the new tensioner and belt.
Cracking write up. Thanks.

Apology - I noted the age of the thread.
One question please.
When going the bearing replacement route, one has a new smooth bearing, but the rest of the tensioner is "old".
Would the spring inside the tensioner not suffer over years of use?
