Having had problems last year with the Fuel burning heater, following three visits to the 'stealers' I was delighted when mine kicked in during our first spell of cold weather a few months ago. However I spoke too soon because it has now stopped working and despite the usual disconnection method, fuse out etc it still is not working. Having given it some thought, I realised that on at least two occasions, I have let my fuel level drop to the warning light stage before re-fueling . On both of these occasions it was below 3 degrees and from a cold start up, the FBH must have tried to start then after two failed attempts - locked out due to fuel level. So the lesson to be learnt is not to let your fuel level run below quarter of a tank during winter, as it would appear you only get two chances then its a visit to the 'stealers' to get the fault codes cleared. Can anyone else confirm my theory ?

it wont try to start if there is low fuel so should not lock out ,
unless you have the timer/remote mod you cant reset other then using the diagnostic equipment.

If you have the timer/remote how do you reset? Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done
Discovery HSE MY16 (good apart from the heating), now sold
Audi TT Roadster (wow)
MGB Roadster (owned since 1992)
Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE MY08
Saab 9-5 Aero 2002 (gone but not forgotten)

Exactly. Just like the headlights wont be washed if you have low washer fluid. Fail safes all over the D3.
My fuel light comes on a lot these days... and the FBH has never failed to start up this winter.

Dear all
Many thanks for your replies. I am now at a compete loss So it will have to be a visit to the Stealers, interestingly though, I have had a recall letter from Stratstones (Stockton) for an 'urgent' programme enhancement ? The only involvment I had with them was when they replaced both my EGR valves last year on my 54 plate disco, so I might just be cheeky and see if they will clear any apparent faults on the FBH whilst they are updating the files !!!
Regards to you all and happy new year !

Can you let me know how you get on when you take your car back for its "urgent" programme enhancement as I also got a letter from Stratstones telling me this was necessary.

Will do, I had wondered whether another Landrover dealer would do this due to it being a 'recall' as Stockton is 60 plus miles away, Ripon landrover only 8 , but I will update you all soon. The recall reference is SLRQ309 If that helps.
Regards

Hi All,
Just back from local independent specialists today and no fault code was left when they connected up to computer. While D3 was connected up we monitored the ambient temp(1degree) and coolant temp(68 degrees) to see if we could get the FBH to start. NO GO!
So we have left it to see if the heater will start tomorrow morning when vehicle has been left over night.
I also contacted a local Webasto agent who can connect to the FBH and clear any faults within the FBH itself. Approx £15 + vat

My D3 HSE went in for routine servicing today (75k) I mentioned that the FBH had failed to start this winter (not even once that I was aware of)
On collecting the car (and being £410 worse off) but that was expected as there were a couple of other 'extras' I had asked the dealer to look into, the dealer said "your FBH had locked out, and was gummed up with fuel residue, hence the failure to start, it's all done now"
And low and behold, on starting up, there was a puff of white smoke, a nice smell similar to parafin, and a dull roar, I put my hand under the exhaust (under the front nearside wheelarch) and could feel the reassuring warm exhaust gases blowing from the small pipe
And boy did it make a big difference to the speed of the car reaching normal temperature
Cheers,
Steve Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

Has anybody had a go at servicing/ flushing out their FBH ? If so any advice. A common problem seems to be that they can get gummed up. Any advice would be most welcome

adding diesel injector cleaner additives will also clean the heater if it switches on. I add a bottle with every tank in winter There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

I have removed and stripped , cleaned , and checked all components even the fuel pipes and fuel pump!
Rebuild and it works fine but sometimes it does not fire up ( trys to start but shut off )
My personal opinion is that the fuel has not ignited fully before the glow plug shuts off ( after working as a glow plug it turns into a flame moniter) and as it turns into the flame moniter it senses that the fuel is not ignited and shuts down.
I Have sinse filled up with BP ULTIMATE and for the last week have not had any problems
Hope this helps you all who have this problem!
Try this site for the manual it explains how it starts and moniters the flame ,
It is not the same heater but webast assure me its the same procedure!
