EGR valves need replacing?

Please: my (independent) dealer tells me that the diagnostics show that the EGR valves need replacing and that it is dangerous not to do so as the motor might cut out at any time. I have not noticed any loss in power although the car has not been used too much recently for obvious reasons...

Please could anyone help advise what I shouold do? Thanks.

Just blank them and drive it. It’s a cheap £15 job.

They open and close to allow recirculating of gasses to keep the emissions down.

Thanks so much. So is it right that they could cause the motor to cut out if they fail? Thanks.

No -id guess the garage is just pressuring you into work being done. The worse that should happen is your vehicle will feel sluggish.

If an egr sticks open the car can actually catch fire - the hot exhaust gas goes straight back into the plastic cylinder head. This happened to me on my 2009 HSE D3

Fortunately caught it before the fire got a hold and received a payout for fire from the Insurance

That’s why it’s best to blank them to stop any fumes even entering the EGR’s

If you blank them off, does it have any undesirable consequences? Does it screw up emissions on the mot? Thank you all for your help.

Muffle the valves. The heat exchanger is additionally removed from us. The program is being changed. Let Greenpeace think about the air. The car will go very quickly and there will be no mistakes.

Hello dear friends.

I am writing to you from Istanbul / Turkey.

1 year ago I bought a 2005 model year Discovery 3 with 125.000 km mileage, maintained by an authorized service.

I have been using the car for 1 year, it has 138.000 km mileage currently.

I have not had any problems so far.

However, recently my car had a problem of not accelerating despite my pressing the gas pedal;

The first time, it was fixed when I stopped and started the car again, and the second time, it was fixed when I pressed the gas pedal all the way to the floor. After experiencing this problem, I took my car to a private service.

They said the problem was caused by the EGR valve. They disabled the EGR valve and reloaded the software to the car.

Then I set off on a long road of 800 km with my car with 5 people in my car, a fully loaded trunk and the air conditioner on;
I burned 12.3 lt at an average speed of 120 km and 11.3 lt at an average speed of 90 km. On this trip my tire pressures are; The front was 33, the rear was 42 PSI.

During this trip, I felt that my vehicle's 0-60 km/h acceleration slowed down significantly and I observed occasional fluctuations in my vehicle's rpm while cruising at a constant speed. These fluctuations caused a slight shaking in the car. At the same time, the “SPECIAL PROGRAMS OFF” warning came on twice during this long trip and TERRAIN RESPONSE was disabled.

After this service repair my fuel consumption increased and my vehicle's performance decreased slightly.

What do you think about this; Could something be missing / done wrong at the service, or are these experiences normal?

If it suspected that the EGR's have failed open you should blank them with bits of metal.

Shaking and RPM fluctuation can be the torque convertor between the engine and automatic gearbox. You don't get an error message though. Dr Tranny can be a short term fix (add to gearbox oil).

You may want to check it has a good quality fuel filter fitted.

I can't comment on fuel consumption

After my 7 days summer trip, i will check the values again on my way back during 800 km away and bring it to service again to explain my complaining. I will share from here again the developments.

Thanx for helps from now on.
