Engine noise
My TDV6 D3 now a week and a half old, and has done just under 1000 miles. I drove it reasonably carefully for the first 500 miles, most of which was motorway miles at approx 2K rpm - being an auto it's hard to thrash it anyway. I don't know if it's just my imagination, but the engine seems louder than when I picked it up. It sounds quite rattly / tinckly under even quite moderate acceleration. Everybody else talks about how quiet their cars are, I just hope I don't have a friday afternoon motor. Would like some reassurance before it goes in for a remap.

Its difficult to describe sounds on a forum. The engine is refined, but you can still tell its a diesel. Best thing is to compare with another one. Maybe it is slightly noisier after the initial tighness of the engine has been overcome.
Maybe worth checking the oil level, as they do use a bit at first.

I know this sounds silly but are you driving it with the window open? When I picked my car up I revelled in the quietness and limousine like surroundings with the aircon on. 4000k miles later I enjoy the hot weather and often drive with the windows open and it sure sounds rattly like a diesel should (though better than most). Close the windows and, hey presto, back in the limo.

I have been running it on Sainburys' soot chucker. Perhaps I should save up and treat her to a different tipple and see if it helps.

I’m sure you have but keep a careful eye on the oil level as the engine is designed to suck oil into the bores for the first few thousand miles (engine has no liners)

Now you've got me worried - do we need a poll on whether we think the engine is noisier since the upgrade?
I put the noise down to the fact that I do drive with the windows open most times and it is coincidence that the upgrade was followed by the hot weather and much more 'open window' activity. I have, however subconsciously noticed the classic diesel rattle and it is only Si's post that has dragged it up from the depths of my brain.

So if I get it remapped it might make it quieter? (any excuse)

Yeah, and you ended up rejecting that one. Fills me with confidence.
Give me a shout if you are anywhere near Leicester in the next couple of days.

On the subject of engine noise:
When I first got the TDV6 I was impressed at how quiet the diesel was in comparison to the outgoing petrol Pajero.
After about 2 months of summer driving (aircon on) I did start to hear the engine and body noises but only because I had become conditioned to the general quietness cf the Pajero.
From my experience fuel doesn't make a change to my engine noise but the enhancement did make a BIG change to smoke output (any diesel).
Oil changes do tend to make a difference and it doesn't matter whether it is a petrol or diesel engine. As the oil becomes darker with contaminants, it seems to lose its ability to quieten the engine. Especially towards the oil change time I notice it. And when the fresh oil is onboard, I can definitely note a quieter engine.
Therefore I have entered a "No difference" in the Engine Noise poll.LeighW
The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)
