Detachable towbar ...is it fit for purpose

Probably discussed before, so forgive me if I am raising this again.

I have read of incidents of the detachable towbar wearing, failing and even being billed as useful only for ' lightweight and infrequent towing'.

I wonder if this is a historic failing that has been resolved, as my D4 MY12 has a detachable towbar and I am planning on towing a heavy caravan around Europe a couple of times this year. Apart from having it checked out by dealer...is it really designed for heavy caravan towing?

Depends what you call heavy - I have towed our Airstream all over the UK, France and Germany since getting our XS in 2011 and all without a problem. The Airstream is the 532 single axle twin berth and weighs in at 1700 KG.

Our XS is fitted with the detachable tow bar which is always removed when not towing - the car is due a service and MOT this month and the towing gear will be checked under the current Land Rover Bulletin but seems to be a good tight fit. Thumbs Up

Mine was a tight fit then a small wobble, set in, then a bigger wobble then clonks over every bump with the intent on the back then I lost faith in it and fitted a fixed towbar.

I used the detachable for 4 years - removed after each tow and lubricated but now I am far happier with my fixed set up. No more clonks and rattles. Thumbs Up

Nothing wrong with it.
mines never been out of its hole in the 2 years I've had my d3, and I tow 5/6 days a week.
its a twin axle box trailer which includes dirt tracks, country lanes and feilds and I've never doughted it

Latest LANDROVER manual says only to be in receiver when towing & to take out when not towing - so that is LR advice
Personally not had a problem with previous ones in RRS and disco 3 but have taken precaution of the group buy metal block on mine just to be extra safe
Previously those that have a special place in my heart

we've just got our Disco 3 - and have spent the past half hour down the pit, removing the removable tow ball; I've ordered a sitter fixed and will put this on next week. I don't want to risk my 1800kg's of Hobby going for a walk on it's own.
Just got me a D3 Manual; I'm new to this Discovery Stuff!

Hi mate I'm in Sunderland also and my car is going into Stratstone at Stoney gate on Wednesay to be checked. If there's play they will fit a fixed towbar free of charge.
Might be worth booking it in as you won't have to pay for a replacement
