Breakdown cover options?

Hi all,
So after 29 years with the AA I finally gave up asking for a discount every year and decided to cancel my policy. Oddly they didn't even try to offer me a better deal.

I discovered I was being offered Gold membership for £180 a year but that it no longer offered onward travel or overnight accommodation, just relay of vehicle and passengers to one destination.

So looking around I can get comprehensive personal cover ranging from £35 to £120ish depending on who I go with.

So who are you all using and who would you recommend?

I am tempted with Eversure at £45 or Axa at £70. Axa offer cover for vandalism and a few other things on top of breakdown and non fault accident recovery.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi,

I currently use Driver Guardian - £116 cover for the Disco and includes home start, roadside, onward travel - UK and 31 days in europe

Not had to use them yet thankfully, but pretty slick setup and they only offer full cover, also offer discount on renewal, mines showing just over £100 for next year

I use green flag (mayday via caravan club) as they are the only ones who will recover our Twin axle caravan. Had to use them a couple of weeks back, and whilst there was a long wait for them to get to us, they recovered the car and caravan hone, and then next day picked up the car and took it to the garage for me.

I pay £109 for 2 cars and the caravan for recovery and home and roadside cover.

Recently renewed our RAC via Tesco Clubcard vouchers, their rates have gone down a good wadge. ISTR it was £39 of vouchers for 2 peeps, any car, roadside, at home, recovery anywhere in UK and unlimited call outs. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

oooh that's a good deal - will also check my clubcard points, unlikely to be using them on the eurotunnel this year Laughing

I'm with RAC at the moment.
Had to use them last week for recovery from North Wales to home with a twin axle caravan in tow.

Engine went bang at noon, phoned in to register breakdown, finally recovered from site 9pm Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

So, nine hours waiting on a hillside on the famous A470 to have my kit recovered to Oswestry because it was late. Thank god I had phoned my little bruv earlier who drove 3.5 hours to pick me, wife and 3 dogs up to take us all home with another 3.5 hour journey.

Disco and caravan arrived back to me the following day.

Will I remain with them ??? Jury's out at the mo

RAC are a shambles when it comes to recovery.
How many RAC liveried recovery vehicles do you ever see on the road, I don't think I have noticed any.
Heard too many times of 6 hour+ waits from others and had to endure 3-4 hour waits myself on more than one occasion so they are a no no for me.

Plus, they don't really speak for the motorists any more as they are just owned by venture capitalists purely for profit.

Be careful with Autoaid. There are lots of cases of them moving people to auto renewal and saying they informed them they were doing this via emails that people have never seen. MSE has lots of reports of this.

I have a slightly different strategy that may not suit some.

Over the years, I have bought breakdown cover at the side of the road at the point of breakdown. Once on a bike and once in the BattleBus A6. Yes it is more expensive of course but only by a factor of two. That is over a period spanning 15 years or so since I adopted this strategy.

So if I only breakdown once every two years, then I consider myself quids in. At the moment I've got about a decade in the bank...Smile

Every year at the point of insuring, I consider it but each time I take the breakdown gamble...So far I'm into my third year of Disco ownership. Check back in a few more years... 8)

My father famously did that when the fuel pump on his MGB gave up in the Highlands. Joined AA on the spot, who not only got there in under 2 hours, but also managed to fix the fuel pump enough to get him home.

I have Green Flag as a benefit of my premium bank account. The two times I've had to use them, they have been very quick to respond, and very helpful.

Thumbs Up +1 for RAC paid with clubcard vouchers. No brainer for the cost. Covers all people in our household with family membership.
