Australia 2013 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 Base 7 Seat Auto Fuji WhiteDiscovery 4

So it looks like HT+ is the way to go for the next set of tyres, considering were i have been with the wrangler, snow & rock in the high country, gravel roads throughout SA, with no problems i an confident the Coopers will be fine whilst the family grows up a little (now dealing with 6 week old daughter and 17 mth old son), next real off road trip is a while away.

Thanks for your advice
Cheers

Is Coopers / BFG or Mickey Thompson bringing out any serious AT offroad tyres (like the Cooper ST's or STTs) in 18 inch versions in the forseeable future?

Discojames,

Simon_arch1 has "Mickey Thompson ATZ 275/65-18" which is the closest to an AT in an 18". They seem to clear okay but not sure about the spare wheel since they are 32.1" diameter compared to 30" OEM Wrangler.

Discojames,

I looked into fitting the Mickey Thompson ATZ 275/65-18 but hit a snag; in NSW these tyres are “not legal” due to their size. An engineering certificate can be obtained for around $400 but in order to get this certificate a speedo correction unit needs to be fitted. These units cost in the region of $250 excluding fitment. I'm under warrantee and do not want to create a "sticky situation" and decided not to fit these tyres. I asked Simon_arch1 if they fit into the tyre well and they do "with a little tyre grease and a little persuasion" to quote Simon.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like they may also cause some rubbing when articulated if they are that tight to fit. Had the same problem with the series one Disco when I fitted larger wheels - ended up having to cut 1 inch of the rear guard - not something I would want to repeat with a new car!

Maybe I will wait until I wear out the standard tyres. How good are the standard tyres off road - mainly rocks, dirt and some mud? Does the rear electric diff lock and traction contol compensate for the tyres?

Thanks James

the standard tyres puncture easily and can get sliced up too, this is my experience to date but apart from that it has not stopped me going to where I want to go, proper mud might be a different story. I would run with them for a while and keep an eye on them re. pressures, uneven wear and wait until the Grabbers arrive or something else hits the shelves.

I had my Coopers (HT+) fitted yesterday and the tyre bloke also did my alignments both front and rear which were out - hence the scrubbed two RH. (Particularly the rear). He is pretty sure he got it right and I got him the degrees off the site. Back to him at 15,000km or sooner to keep an eye on things. Incidently, $379.00 for the tyres and $110.00 to do the alignment. He said the tricky bit with the alignment was the settling of the air suspenion with the engine off and understanding where the angles etc are coming from. Wranglers stuffed at 36,000km.

We should change this post to:
255/60/18 AT Tyres- NOT AVAILABLE!
They are now saying June-July Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil
Manufacturers have been leading them along but they don't seem to care to do anything about it.
I don't think he even looked at my e-mail. Evil or Very Mad
Cooper HTs may be the way to go as the Wranglers don't last.
I have run out of other options and time. Sad

Spoke to dealer, said have changed to All weather wranglers. But I am confused about the alignment. One dealer says 4 hrs @ $125/hr, another LR dealer $60 to put car into alignment mode and tyre fitter will charge approx $80 to align 4 wheels.
Can anyone explain what is going on? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
PS anyone had all weather fitted and how do they handle and what is the road noise like.

As far as I understand it this is what will need to happen, either get another quote from another dealer or if your old tyres were unevenly worn the dealer should do it under warranty anyway.

I have had them on mine from new they are ok bu chip easily off road and they wear quick; at 30K they are worn out.

Just got this back from UK tyre site:

Dear Sir
Thank you for contacting 4site 4x4 tyre centre.
With regards to your enquiry,
The General Grabber At2 in the size 255 60 18 has just been available in the UK for the last 2 weeks, we don’t actually give out prices all I can do is put in touch with your nearest dealer. In this instance the best thing to do is re-contact your supplier and tell him that they are available in the UK for export.

Any problems please feel free to contact me again

If you would like any further information regarding 4x4 wheels or tyres then please feel free to contact us. You can respond to this e-mail or call our team on 0870 9009 444

Kind Regards

Tom Smith-Phelps

4x4 Southam Tyres

tom.phelps@southamtyres.co.uk

I have forwarded it to Dynamic tyres, but as they do not appear keen, maybe we could get someone else to get them from the UK?

How many of us are waiting?

Look at http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic11012.html

They have experience in exporting them (to Ireland at least!) and have the 18s in stock now (well they did last week anyway). Might be worth seeing what it'd cost to get them sent to Aus.
