England 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Auto Bonatti GreyDiscovery 3
Viewing Cars

In my search for a discovery 3, I've started singling out a few on the likes of auto trader and arranging viewings.
Been to see my 1st tonight a 56 plate Stornoway grey SE with 77k on the clock. As per the advise in LRO and on here etc. I decided to sit in the car and try everything out, now here came my problem, its all very well that the advise is try everything and make sure it all works, but with so many switches knobs & dials that coming from a disco 2 I was unfamiliar with how are you supposed to know how to try everything and whether it works !!!
A manual would be a good idea I guess to try ands familiarise myself with the features.
Anyway my decision tonight was to pass on it, smell of dogs, four tyres on legal limit, non LR dealer service history, couldn't seem to get air con on cold and numerous little body & trim scuffs.
The search continues.
Regards
Mark

We are in the same boat at present with the wife wanting a D3 with sunroofs for about £10k-£12k.

Most D3s seem to have faults or other show stoppers like had dogs in the past.

Just try everything out but the aircon seems to be quite common problem as does tyres and history.

I just couldn't get the air on to blow cold, so assumed a fault.
Don't think you'd ever get rid of the dog smell though and to be honest it wasn't that bad, but when you havnt got dogs you notice it more.

Aircon is probably only a refill at £60 but makes you think if that's not been maintained then what else has been skimped on.

I know a lot of forum members with D3s have dogs but for us if its had dogs in the past no way would we buy it. Thumbs Up

what's the matter with dogs?! With the LR thick boot liner, mine's been puked in, Censored in, shat in - but the 3rd row is still perfect for 2 and 4 paws after 7+ years. The dogs really like the aircon too.

There's nothing a good valet doesn't cure if you have the liner....! Decent servicing counts for more IMO.

Without been too specific about dogs it's allergy related that no valet will fix Thumbs Up

the wife is allergy extraordinaire but manages but it's more about touch than proximity. So she lives happily in the car...!

None dealer maintenance is not necessarily a bad thing if it's been done by a competent LR independent garage. Locally, the independent garage that I use is far, far better than the Main Stealer!

I bought a 2005 HSE auto, 70k miles, FSH from a 2nd hand car dealer in May for £13k. Test drove ok, had a recent MOT, I looked for faults raised here on Disco3 and thought I'd found a gem. 2 months later a further £4.5k has had to be spent to get the vehicle into a roadworthy state I'm comfortable driving.
New compressor, aircon re-charge, new front wheel bearing, new brake pipes, new rear discs & pads, new rear brake shields, new rear bearings, new electronic park brake, new park brake shoes, transmission double flush, cambelts changed and a non functioning satnav.
I would seriously recommend that you have the vehicle independantly inspected by someone that knows what they're doing before buying. There's bound to be something wrong and you'll have the advantage of knowing what it will cost you and have serious justification to barter the price down.

Good news is bicarbonate of soda gets rid of the dog smell as if by magic. Sprinkle, leave overnight then hoover up. Mine had that too.

Now it's all fixed (tempting fate just writing that) I now have the famous permagrin, it's a brilliant drive and I love it.
