Diagnostics
Hi to everyone,
Yesterday i had my first hiccup, Diagnosed as Throttle sensor failure, I live too far away from regular trips to a worthy dealer for work doing if i cant do it myself Sooo i am in limbo as to wether to purchase one of these Hawkeye Diagnostic readers, at close to £300 a pop im not in any hurry unless someone can advise if they are worth it.
Yesterday after being recovered i wanted to go to my village garage but he could'nt take the disco as he has no diagnostics for it, so if i get 1 of these things at least that is a big bridge crossed.Any advise would be helpfull.
To finish! i had to take the car 50 miles down the road just to find out what was wrong

You say "take", does that mean you drove it? I dought in would drive that far with a faulty throttle sensor It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
Look at other options than the Hawkeye - it has its followers for a lot of reasons - locked to model type not VIN so can be used on all D3 assuming that was your choice of licence and not just your own car.
Other options include the IID tool, BBS Faultmate and a couple of others.
IID tool is popular and is being continuously developed and can do more than both the Hawkeye and Faultmate.Mark.

Hi, M3DPO,
Car was recovered by Rac and taken on back of breakdown truck, Book says you can still drive but its painfully slow as you have limited revs and maybe not the power for all gears, i only drove a few hundred yards to a car park before the dreaded phone call to rac.

The problem with the Hawkeye is that you have to spend quite a bit of money on different leads, connectors ETC that they fail to mention before you buy the thing for £300. That may only be if you use it on different cars but worth doing some research before splashing out.
The IID tool seems to be the best one around the £300 mark unless you want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for the MSV-2, about £820
The problem with the IID tool is that it uses the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel to control it, so if you have no cruise control you're stuffed.
They all have their problems, find the best one that suits your needs. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

Are you sure of the diagnosis? If there is a very poor throttle response it could be the EGR valve or a Turbo problem. If you really want to be serious on your own diagnostics then a faultmate or ideally and MSV2 are really good.

Hi Chris, Suddenly lost power apart from enough to just keep moving in 2nd gear, Disco was plugged into machine which said i needed egr valve, I told mechanic egrs were blanked off at least 10 months ago, he then said it is showing faulty throttle sensor Seems i'm limited to what i can use as i do not have cruise control as i have an entry level D3 Manual.

Does your local garage need to work on other D3's? If so, buy a Hawkeye (I believe they're multi-VIN), then strike up a deal for a discounted rate on your work or hire it to him

The IIDTool BT (Bluetooth) is on the way to Britpart. It does cost slightly more, tho, and we use Bluetooth BLE (3rd gen bt) which only works with very late devices (iphone 4s>, ipad 3>, and ipad mini; google have not released an android API for BLE yet, so this is still coming).
Antony, alternatively you can pick up cruise switchgear (ebay?) and install it on your steering wheel - not difficult. The IIDTool will function immediately as the switchgear sends messages as soon as its installed. You can then also use the IIDTool to change the CCF (car configuration) to enable cruise and it will function as if your D3 had left the factory with it. www.gap-diagnostic.com
My understanding is that BLE available with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
I believe it's available on devices (amongst others) such as Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4, HTC One and Google Nexus 7.

Done just that, I fully intend to stick with D3 as its a great vehicle so Hawkeye is a good investment for me, it will only be needed for engine bay stuff as i dont have all the singing and dancing extras, Good news at mo is my car is ready and it was the Throttle Sensor as diagnosed, motor has done 121,000 miles so if its original? i cant complain.
Picked up the motor today, full replacement of throttle pedal and sensor, Bill came to £260.84, Labour was around £60, Diagnosis £40, Thats where Hawkeye will come in handy in future, Pedal inc sensor £114, rest was dreaded vat, Im reasonably happy as all the dreaded Turbo failure Ideas were running through my head, and the pound signs were building up needless to say im relieved.
Thanks to you guys who gave advise and helpfull words,
