Rear wiper is stuck in the middle of the screen, it occasionally moves about an inch when it feels like it. What do you reckon, the motor?

First thing I would check is to make sure the nut that holds the arm on is tight Cheers Ian

Having a similar problem with my wiper. When you first use it it only moves about 4 inches at a time. If I keep switching it on and off I eventually get it to the end of the cycle and then it works from that point onwards flawlessly.
Obviously I'll check the nut and tighten it but I've seen it mentioned in other thread that I should oil it? Oil what? How do you do it etc?
If it's something more serious then this thread tells me how to get at the motor:

Unfortunately there aren't any pictures. Can anyone help with that? (The thread's quite old).

Daf had issues with my front wipers that then manifested itself to the rear as well:
1) Position 2 on the front would not work, had to move it to position 3 (rapid clear), then back to position 2
2) A few weeks later with still the problem on the fronts, but occassionally not working at all, rear wiper would not turn off.
Solution:
a) Changed the instrument stork... worked fine for two days, then back to as was
b) Changed motor on front....fine for 3 weeks, then back to as was
c) Had the stork replaced under warranty....all fine and dandy after that.
So just to say, issues for the rear could be instrument stork related, simple plug in and play part, but could also be the motor on the rear wiper or both....very frustrating but yer will get it sorted. Me I would got for the instrument stork first to see.

Took a look at the wiper and turned it on. I gave it a little bit of help and it worked OK from that point onwards. Seems to me that something is sticking or seized up. Don't think it's anything to do with the switches on the instrument stalk. There was mention (on some thread) of oiling the unit any ideas how?

Usually it's the shaft that needs oiling, the shaft that the wiper arm is bolted too. It can rust and the seize up. Try that first, you'll need to take the wiper arm off first. Not a hard job. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

I flicked off the little plastic cover and I need a spanner to remove the arm. What next? DO I just lift the boot and dribble some 3 in 1 into it or do I have to removed the trim on the inside.

Btw I wasn't trawling looking for kn@b jokes........I'm watching with interest as I have a similar issue, rear wiper only moves a few inches when switched on. If you toggle the switch on/off a few times it seems to creep along the window until it has completed one cycle. After that......fine.....it also seems to work if the rear window is wet, or I liberally use the rear wash.
I guessed mine is slightly seizing and the friction of a dry window although low is too much and stops the arm?
Let me know how you get with "oiling your shaft "
If it works ill try fixing mine when I get 5 mins

Yes dribble some oil in. The inner shaft should move but gets rusted onto the outer shaft. Don't fill the motor up though. If that doesn't work or there is no inner shaft then it's shafted.
As for the knob joke..........My daughter smeared butter all over my knob earlier.............................
Now I can't open the door. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

Had five minutes spare so gave this a go.
1. Flicked off the cover for the nut using my front door key (other tools are available and Northerners can use their fingernails)
2. 13mm socket to remove the nut
3. Gently pull the wiper, then realise it is on tight so give it a bit of a tug and a wiggle and that comes off lovely as well.
4. The tricky bit was to decide which bit to oil. The rear screen butts onto a circular bit of plastic and you have around a 1mm gap to a central round bit of plastic. This central bit of plastic looks as if it is bonded to the wiper drive bolt - but it isn't. The only moving bit is the metal so you have to put your 3 in 1 on the join between the inner plastic and the wiper drive bolt.
5.I gave it a couple of spins then lifted the door into a horizontal position for a few minutes so that gravity would be on my side. Did this a couple of times (oil, turn it over, horizontal boot) and wiped away the excess that dribbled all over the place.
Note that: THE WIPER DOES NOT WORK IF THE BOOT IS OPEN.
As my Disco is over 7 years old I also noticed that the hinged bit of the wiper blade and spring were corroded solid. Some 3 in - 1 and a bit of a wiggle freed it up nicely. Made b*gger all difference to the lower part of the stroke though as the wiper is still 3mm off the glass! Let's call that a design feature and move on with our lives.
Thanks to everyone who helped.

Thanks Daf for the great instructions - this method fixed my recalcitrant rear wiper
I like the trick of adding the oil then leaving the tailgate open to get the 3-in-1 to soak in. Worked a treat Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond
