Looking for a trolly or bottle jack that can lift the disco high enough to take the wheel off for brake disc and pads - does it really need to be 53cm max height? There don't seem to be many on the market that go that high! Bottle jacks seem to be cheaper - are there any that go high enough for the job? Thanks

SGS and Sealey seem to be the recommended jacks on here, a Mercedes Sprinter bottle jack will lift the car high enough and these come up on ebay from time to time... always go for something with more capacity than you will need as it's a heavy old car! 3 tonne is a good starting point!
Don't forget a good set of axle stands if working under the car!

Jack under the lower suspension arm, 1.5 ton trolley jack or bottle jack is more than adequate with a timber packer between to prevent slippage backed up with timber chocks and/or axel stands. If you can't get the jack under drive onto a timber chock. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hello from the south of France!
I agree, just lift the lower suspension arm and "voilà" the D3 lifts its wheel... Don't forget the axle stand.

What causes it to lift the wheel? I'd be worried it might decide to lower the wheel again when I have a wheel or disc half off! I do like the idea of that though.

Another question - my driveway is tarmac so the trolley jack wouldn't roll to correct for the lift arc - would it roll if I put it on a sheet of plywood?

IMHO, mate "what" is "British Engineering at its best". But hey, I'll admit, I might be a bit biased. I came across this description in a previous post and thought, why not give it a try? I was absolutely blown away! I even repeated the experiment a few times (I'm a scientist in real life, mind you), just to be safe, using an axle stand. Once the wheel was back on, I hopped into the three-legged monster and politely asked its EAS to bring the beast back to normal.
It sounds crazy, I know.

well, my driveway is gravel and I did use sheet of plywood (now under the back seats, with the axle stand and the 3t bootle jack).
