replacement windscreen - advice please
heard a tiny stone strike on the A24 yesterday, which this morning has become a 24inch crack across the screen.
i assume i'm not the only D3owner to need a new windscreen, but before i get the insurance wheels moving i just want to see whether there's any collective knowledge/advice on dealing with this.
not needed to deal with this kind of claim before and want to avoid being fobbed off with something less than i had. my D3 is an 08 model with the heated glass element etc and i want to make sure i get a like for like with everything as it was.
might be worrying about nothing, but thought it was worth asking here first.
Personally I've had nothing but problems anything but OEM glass - so now insist on Autoglass getting an OEM screen and I pay the extra £60.00 the insurers (NFU mutual) ask for OEM glass. The problems I've had with non OEM all relate to the heated screen in that we've found the rarely last more than 12 months before failling and we've also noticed that on the OEM screen the wires appear finer and less apparent than on the AutoGlass version.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

I agree with MrH go for the OEM screen. It might also be worth checking to see if your disco has Optikool glass which was an option. If so insist or this as well.D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone

I had my (heated) screen replaced by Autoglass a few months ago, no problems at all, they fitted a Pilkington OEM screen without question. This was from the Reading branch BTW.
I guess it's luck of the draw really as to how good the branch - and fitters are.
One thing though, insist that they replace the little plastic clips that keep the outer A pillar trim in place, they frequently break while removing the trim and in any case never seem to be all that secure on re-use.
Autoglass replaced both complete trims on mine after I complained that they were loose after re-fitting, if left loose you can end up with rain water coming in through the fixing holes and getting inside the car, not to mention increased wind noise.Clive
Never had a problem with the "fitting" on the Autoglass, just the quality of the product - worked fine at first and then at aroun10-14 months every single one of the 4 or 5 I got fitted failed electrically - yes 5 replacements, but 3 of those were warranty ones until I finally had enough and said only OEMLRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
had my windscreen replaced a couple of weeks ago (for the same reason as you).
Had to go to Carglass - but they assured me the only difference with the screen would be it would not be stamped land Rover. They were good to their word and the screen comes from Pilkington.
Insist to see their order form - Carglass showed me and it had a long list stating glass, replacement clips, replacement connectors and bonding glue etc. They also showed me the type of screen and it was correctly listed as having a slight tint, heating elements, rain/light sensors etc.
Mine has been fitted correctly (as far as I can tell...) including them taking off/remounting the RAI - but I took it to a center rather than them coming to me.
I think if you insist on making sure they have covered everything you should be okay The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeksnearly 4 weeksover 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

My windscreen was replaced by a Pilkington one a couple of months ago. These should be the same as the original LR ones.
One thing I noticed though is that one of the heating wires is out of line. It is just not in the middle between the wires laying next to it. It is just one of the many wires and I am not bothered by it but I wondered whether it is such a flaw that makes it unworthy of the LR label and then they labeled it Pilkington instead.
Another thing I found is that, after the replacement, I have strange wind noises every once in a while originating from around the windscreen. It depends on speed and wind angle but it can be quite loud. I think it is the plastic covers on the A pilar that have slightly bigger gaps on the sides causing swirl. I put some removable sealant in the gaps which helped but I still didn't get rid of the problem entirely.
Cheers,
Bernd

thanks for this discussion, had to replace my windscreen today and read the comments after contacting National Windscreens. When the guys arrived at my work place I checked the make which wasn't Pilkington so asked them to source a Pilkington optikool screen.
To be fair they did that with no quibble and are now fitting it
Have mentioned the 'A' pillar plastic clips so will be looking out for that later.
Cheers

FWIW, I have had 3 windscreens - 2 LR ones and one 'pattern' one. I have commercial insurance, and they don't pay for new windscreens.
I have to say the 'pattern' one (Made by some company called XYG) seems just as good as the LR one, and is tinted the same etc. They all get pitted a little bit over time, as the aerodynamic profile of the disco is more akin to a brick than and aerofoil, and need replacing after 50,000 km or so, especially if a lot of driving over 60 mph/100km/h. This one has been in the vehicle for about 20,000 Km so far, and I have no complaints, and it was half the price. The only thing is mine isn't heated, so that may be a factor OK.

After my screen was hit by a small stone heading home on the M5 yesterday, it quickly grew into a 300mm long crack, I contacted my insurer (Equity Star) today, I was told they only authorise Autoglass to carry out a replacement.
When the Autoglass guy called me back I mentioned I wanted a OEM glass fitted, and was told no problem, they would source from LR and let me know if my excess would need to be increased.
I await their call Never get mad - get even !!

To be honest the oem screens are made in the Pilkington factory and they are only screen printed with the Land Rover stamp for the dealers. Most will just say Pilkington, Triplex or Blindex. They are the major glass manufacturers that actually design the glass for new cars that are being developed.
So to be honest having one that says Land Rover would not make a difference
