Is it possible that the ambient light sensor is faulty? I think the dash lights react to ambient light in the same way as the headlights on automatic. I have my headlights set to Scandinavian always-on mode, with the headlight switch left at Automatic. In that setting the headlights are always lit, but the dash lights respond to the ambient light as per the normal automatic mode, switching on and off if you go into a tunnel or the sun disappears behind the clouds. I'm guessing if that sensor was faulty it could send odd signals to the dimmer switch and/or dash?Previously:

Pete, perhaps we are not talking about the same sensor - I don't have a satnav display! With normal settings and the lights on auto, dash lighting comes comes on and off along with the headlights, responding to the light sensor in the middle of the windscreen. In Scandinavian setting and the lights at auto, the headlights stay on, but the dash lighting still comes on and off dependant on external light level from the windscreen sensor. My suggestion (and it was really only thinking aloud!) was that if the info from the light sensor on the windscreen to the switching of the dash lights was corrupted, then the dash lights might show strange behaviour. This could include further complications when the dimmer switch was activated. On mine, in Scandinavian mode and the lights in Auto, the light sensor over-rides any input from the dimmer switch - only when the outside light darkens does the dash light up and the dimmer become operational.
D353, since you have the GAP tool, it might be worth trying a change of headlight settings to see if this makes any difference. I'm not expecting it will, but there is nothing to lose in trying.
EDIT: Or more simply, with the headlights in Auto, check the sensor operation in daylight by laying something over it to make sure that the headlights react to external lighting. (A magazine drapes over the car roof and covers the sensor quite easily without slipping off).Previously:

Hi I hear what you are saying but the light sensor works fine in low light but I see no harm in trying what you are suggesting

Arh. I thought you were talking about the ALS sensor at the bottom of the Rev Counter. (next to the red alarm light). This does the SatNav brightness

What about things like the window switches. Do they light up at night ?
Does the climate panel dim down at night?

So I've just been out to check the lights. The only things that light up are the heater controls, the headlight switch the off road controls and the radio display. I don't have the GPS head unit.

First check the light switch dimmer output is 12v when dash illumination is off.
Then
Couple of options.
1) something shorting out. I don’t think it’s that is your case
2) open spliced joint. Sj117 on the circuit diagram looks likely. And common issue.
I don’t know where it is though.
If you can’t find it easily. Guess you can run a new wire between the dash and light switch and that will also feed everything else required

Thank you Pete.
I'll be digging my Multi Meter out this weekend. I was thinking/hoping that I could add a live feed to the Dash Lights but was worried the LED's might only be 5 volts. Also on the PDF I spotted a relay in the Dash Light Circuit which I think I should track down.

You won’t find the relays.
They are tiny and soldered inside the fusebox.
