Head gasket thickness

Hi I'm rebuilding my engine and need to know what the clearance should be between the block and head.I can measure piston protrusion to give me the thickness but not sure how much extra to allow and wondered if there was a figure for this if that makes sense Confused Thumbs Up

Yes normally there are standard gaskets and then thinner ones when the head has been skimmed, assumin your engine has not been apart before I would have thought it should be the thicker/standard gasket. Do you know the history of the car?
The gaskets always used to be marked up with their thickness/number which would allow the dealer to supply the same/equivalent, if you have the old gasket, have a look and see what marks it has on it, might be as simple as nicks/notches on one side (from memory I think that is what Peugeut used). May be worth talking to Nixck he may be able to tell you if there are any identifying marks on them and what they are.

Forgive me for being thick, surely if you skim the head you need a thicker gasket not thinner to maintain compression? or am i missing something?

Hi all my old gaskets have 3 notches on,the heads have not been skimmed, what im doing is replacing the block and wanted to measure it all properly and get the right gaskets instead of just putting the middle of the road one's on. Thumbs Up

Cylinder Head Gasket

The cylinder head gasket is a three-layer, laminated
steel type and is available in five different thickness.
The choice of gasket thickness is dependent on the
maximum piston protrusion. Gasket thickness is
identified by serrations cut into the front end of the
gasket.

To calculate the correct cylinder head gasket thickness,
each piston must be measured at two points, with an
average of the two measurements taken to determine
the piston protrusion. The highest of the three
measurements will determine the gasket required for
that particular cylinder head.

NOTE: The difference between the maximum and
minimum protrusion measurement in any one bank
should not be greater than 0.1mm. It is permissible to
have a different grade of gaskets between the LH and
RH banks.

Have you been able to source all the replacement components that you require without difficulty.

I thought that Land Rover were "difficult" and were insistant on supplying short engines, rather than blocks etc...

Your right about the block i had to buy a short motor as you cant buy a crank or shells separately,I found a company that could supply me a crank but couldnt get any shells so may look into that when i have my old one apart,TLO/Nick has been a great help in sourcing all my parts Bow down Thumbs Up
