wheel bearing/gearbox?????

Hi

I'm a bit concerned having a big garage bill coming up Sad
Noticed a grinding noise coming from the front - depending on speed not on revs
begins at about 30km/h and up with an upgoing frequency....
no problems so far with gear shifting or burnt smell...
137.000 km / 85.000miles so far

First thoughts were on front wheel bearings but also now on the auto gearbox having read some threads...

Might be able to check tomorrow in a friends garage

WHAT to look for?
Any hints?

Thx for answering

Re: wheel bearing/gearbox?????

When I had that kind of grinding noise - it was the front bearing. First - we were not able to identify which one - so replaced front right - finally it was front left - so both replaced and all is fine now.

hi there I too had this problem I had to replace both front hubs at £140 a side easy to do your self , but firstly jack up the front and check for play in the bearing then turn the wheels as fast as you can you will ear the noise

You don,t always get movement with these wheel bearings by rocking the wheel when jacked up.
I find that when you drive the vehicle at 40-50 mph and steer left to riGht, this loads the bearing and makes a noise. If the noise is apparent when steering left, it will probably be the RHS bearing and the opposite for turning right.

Hope this helps
