| Turbo Failure / engine noise....? |

I have a problem and need advise, and I know it's a long shot as "engine noises" are somewhat hard to diagnose. But any pointers would be appreciated.
Yesterday driving at about 40kmph the engine all of a sudden developed a loud "rumble". Now I can best discribe this as the same noise you would expect from either a dry bearing in a water pump, or a failed bearing from a fan belt tensioner. It sounds exactly like a metalic bearing failure, now that's not to say it is a bearing. It also changes speed with engine revs.
The engine still runs very well, although I stopped straight away and only drove at tickover for 200 yards. During the small journey I had to make the noise actually stopped and has now decreased to 20% of its original volume, but it's still there.
It seems to be coming from the rear right had side of the engine, no visable signs of oil or smoke, just this metalic noise.
I just think it may be the turbo shaft that's failed as it has that type of rattle....
Any help or pointers anyone could give would be a help, before I have to transport it 200k to my Dealer.

turbo is on the left hand side m8 looking at engine from the drivers seat
and what turbo shaft you on about?
wheel bearing?

start from checking fanbelt tensioner its also likely to fail
sometimes they even catch crank puley

Let me clarify a few points, and thanks for the feedback:
The noise is from the right hand side as you look at the engine from the front (bonnet open), to the right of the engine bank of cylinders towards the rear. It sounds like it's coming from the turbo or the far rear of the engine. Also I was refering to the actual shaft in the turbo, linking drive vanes to pressure vanes.
I'd look at the fanbelt tensioner but that's at the front, where this is coming from the rear.
Not looking good......

does it make the same noise when stationary?
if not i would check front prop shaft and front diff as they grind before going

The noise is constant when the engine is running, and it's not transmission of wheel related.
Just spoke to a Dealer who said it could the an EGR valve that's broken off and is loose in the exhaust, doesn't sound like that in my ears. He did say it could also be a tensioner of the rear high pressure fuel pump belt which is in the rear of the engine.
Think this could be getting expensive...
