Transmission fault

Hi guys, Gear selector won't let me select manual, it goes acroos but nothing happens. It does slide across very smoothly now so I assume something has gone wrong. Last time when I stopped the car it briefly said " Transmission Fault " but went off and hasn't re-appaeared.. Thanks
