ATPM system and Changing to different set of Wheels - MY12

Posted this in TECHNICAL too.

Update for anyone interested about ATPM ( Automatic typre pressure monitoring). I think there is still some confusion re the OEM ATPM system and what happens if you put different wheels on with a DIFFERENT set of ATPM valves fitted.

I have just fitted my Winter wheels and tyres to MY12 with OEM ATPM sytem. I had the new wheels fitted with LR original MY12 ATPM sensors (there are different frequencies for the senders) kindly suplied by Nick/TLO.

Anyway there were various debates with Pete at BellAutos and Andy at AJS 4x4 Tyres and my LR techie and the Firm who supply some of the OEM sensors for LR and other makes. No one was totally sure - with Andy saying he had fitted plenty and had no specific comebacks.

But there was a generally feeling that initially at least it might flag up an error message on the TFT, which driving around a bit might clear OR it would have to be recoded with ALL four new sensor ID codes AND the exact wheel positions of each sensor (which ANDY had kindly already noted for me).

GOOD NEWS - fitted em courtesy of new Site -recommended 3 tonne jack. Got in car, drove down road and ABSOLUTELY no problem. Whistle It just seemed that the message " Automatic Typre pressure monitoring system set for light load", which shows with every ignition sequence, stayed illuminated for slightly longer than usual. Almost as if the system was learning the new sensors.

Did a 20 minute drive and no change whatsoever. Very Happy

Two comments. 1) I think they may have improved this system for MY12 with it becomimg compulsary from 2013. 2) I'm sure you should buy genuine LR sensors, which via Nick with site discount where very similar price to the third party suppliers anyway.

there could be a third option and that while they appear to be OK the system is in fact ignoring the other set and gone into sulk mode not showing any problems Confused

how can that be checked for ?????

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

ATPM apparently is to become part of the upcoming modified MOT. If you have it fitted, it has got to work, if not, MOT failure.

Perhaps the 2010+ FFRR and D4 TPMS system is similar.
My experience was that the dealer didn't quite know how it would work, they said it might be necessary to input the serial numbers of the sensors after fitment (so I kept a record of these) bbut in the end this was unnecessary.

There is a fairly confusing explanation in the operator's manual, that only made sense to me after I had experienced the workings of the system. In effect the system is able to learn a new sensor, or repositioning of a sensor after driving above 23km/h for 16 minutes or so.

I had a set of 19" wheels with MTR's that I wanted to use offroad, so bought the new sensors, fitted them to the wheels, and installed on the vehicle. On startup all appeared normal, but after a couple of minutes of driving I got a message like" TPMS system unavailable" - then continued driving, and after what seemed like 20 minutes the message "TPMS system available" appeared, and all was well.

If the system is not happy, you will definitely know about it. I have had "TPMS system fault" a few times in the past, but since the last service and software upgrade haven't had a re-occurence.

edit- forgot to add, that when you drive a TPMS enabled vehicle with a set of wheels without sensors (which I have done) you will always get the "TMPS unavailable" message at startup, unless of course you have the dealer or a friend with a faultmate disable the system..
TPMS does work - let down a tyre to less than 1.8bar and you will see the graphic on the screen. This has saved me from the inconvenience of changing a tyre next to the road before. Tyre was screwed due to sidewall damage, but at least I could divert to a tyre fitment centre instead of stopping in the traffic

Luckily (unfortunately) we don't have MOT's yet.

There will be a lot of FFRRs failing MOTs in that case!

Sorry all, thought I might have bug Censored ered it by posting twice Crying or Very sad but I though it was a pretty useful bit of info so didn't want anyone to miss it.

I am certain it would flash a message if it wasn't happy OR sulking, and there was a definite delay before the inital TFT message went off - as I said just like it was learning the new sensors.

Re Baben's point - I had NO further messages on my 20 minute drive so maybe MY12 system does learn more quickly and efficiently.

I've had a potential very nasty situation avoided by the ATPM on my X3 - so love em or hate em I had them fitted.

Will update if its throws it toys out Laughing
