Tyre Dilemma - Suggestions?

Once I get my front bushes sorted, (and the uneven tyre wear is hopefully eradicated) I'm going to need 2 new tyres on the front.

I've been running on Pirelli Scorpion Zeros and am happy with the grip/performance etc., but not the wear rate. I've only done about 12k since I got the car 18mths ago and the fronts were brand new then! Shocked The rears were changed last winter for more Zero's but after an unrepairable puncture a couple of months ago one had to be replaced, so I have approx 7.5mm on that side and about 5.5mm on the other (which is a bit annoying).

Because of the Zero's high wear rate I'd like to move away from them and try find something a bit longer lasting but still good in most conditions, i.e. Scorpion ATR's/General AT's or similar?

The trouble is cash is a bit tight at the moment, (as I need to sort the suspension) and I still have plenty of wear in the rears.

So my dilemma is do I:

a) Buy two new Zero's and fit them to the front, cross my fingers that I get a good 12mths+ out of those and the current rears, then buy a full set of AT's/ATR's?
b) Move the rear Zero's to the front and fit 2 new AT's/ATR's to the rear now. Then I can buy another 2 AT's/ATR's for the front in about 9-12mths time when the fronts are worn? (My front's seem wear out a lot quicker than the rears for some reason - lots of low speed manouvering on the driveway perhaps?)

I don't really like having different tyre types front and rear, but likewise I don't like wasting money, (typical accountant SWMBO would say)! Also I want to be well prepared for whatever the winter decides to throw at us.

Do you think a mix of tyre types front and rear would be a bad idea?

I suppose I could bite the bullet, dust off the credit card and buy 4 AT's/ATR's and maybe put the rear Zero's on eBay or something. As one is virtually new I should get a reasonable amount for it and even something for the other one, shouldn't I?

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

first of all, running with not matching tred across all four tyres is not a good think ie 7.5 one side and 5 on the other..... secondly running with new tyres on one axle and used on the other is also not a good think, THIS IS A 4 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE with the drivetrain to match!!!

If yer want to put stress on yer transfer box then fill yer boots Rolling with laughter

IMO you should bin all and start again with ALL four tyres the same tred pattern and same tyre depth, whether you got for second hand tyres....... then that might be the best ecomomic solution Thumbs Up

Thanks character.

I best organise some tyre insurance. Might become a bit expensive having to replace all 4 tyres each time I get an unrepairable puncture on one of them.

I didn't realise having equal tread depth all round was so critical, ooops! Embarassed
