Best m/s tyre for 20" rim |
|
Hi
Anyone recommend the best m/s tyre for a 20" wheel? Currently running Pirelli scorpion zeros but have found these to be very weak on the sidewall and are nearly on the limit after 17k miles.
Thanks

just noticed you are a D4 owner, so see if you can get your standard size of 255/50x20 first. If not, then try 275/45x20's.

You'll need to be aware of clearance issues if you go for a non standard size.
eg links to pics below of clearance on my 275/45 LTZ's on 20" Stormers are below
ie 285/50 LTZ's will rub on a D4 [& poss not on earlier D3]

edited to add: if you want a road tyre and not AT, the Grabber UHP is the best.
But overall the LTZ suits my needs for the best all round on and off road tyre ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

In the market for some new tyres for my D4 too - 255/50 R20 109Ys - and need new boots on all corners. Been to ATS Euromaster today but the only Pirelli Scorpion Zeros they can find on the market now are no longer marked as being M+S rated. Seems to suggest that you can even get standard Scorpion Zeros with the M+S rating no longer indicated on the tyre (?), or go for the full Scorpion Zero Ice & Snow tyres...?
What to do...
My M+S rated OE-fit Scorpion Zeros were superb in the snow/ice last year, so dont want to risk not having the M+S properties in them anymore (if they have changed the tyres?) 747_JK

I think the Pirelli Zero's 255/50x20 we have in stock are M+S rated, will have a look in the morning.
Call me for a good price, also have 255/50x20 Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme's in stock if you fancy a winter tyre.

Don't get excited about the M+S - it's not the same as proper winter tyres.
Over four sets now, I've found that when new, the Zeros are pretty good at most things, and very good for fast road use, but once they start to get a bit thinner (4-5mm so still way more than legal minimum) they're bl**dy awful on anything other than dry tarmac, even in the summer. And on snow, well, I just walked... Switching to Wintracs at the end of November last year was a revelation, even on just wet days, let alone snow
IMHO(!) If you're happy to keep changing the Zeros every 15k or so (and can avoid having them thin over winter) they're a great tyre; that said, I'll be putting the Wintracs back on shortly even with only 2k on the zeros on the new car. Still not sure what to do when the Zeros wear out though - changing the car instead every time I need to decide is getting pricey

An M+S tyre might not be the same as a proper winter tyre (for many reasons), but in terms of all of my driving last year in the snow it was still perfect (for what I needed). However - not being able to get the Pirelli Scorpion M+S tyres anymore, I've gone for the full Scorpion Ice & Snow fitments. Had them put on this weekend - and filled with nitrgoen too.
I'll see how they perform and may just stick with them all year around - alternatively, I'll stick them into the tyre hotel for £30 and buy a set of standard Scorpions for the summer, and switch again next November.
They do look like a pretty mean tyre...! Bring on the ice and snow! 747_JK
