Hi Chris
I had exactly same issue when I plugged my boat trailer with sealed LED lights.
I purchased a LED towing module from:
Smartlogicelectrical.com.au
It's a small aluminium sealed box approx 12cmx6cmx6cm that I bolted underneath above rear bumper above the spare tyre.
You specify what sort of plugs you want, e.g in my case round 7 pen euro to flat 7 pin which us what we have in New Zealand. Once connected you hear the box clicking (I'm guessing relays?) when operating for example indicators.
Made in Australia so you can't go wrong!

Just realised the original thread was posted 11 years ago. Original issue will be well and truly sorted.
Still I'm happy with the smart logic electrical solution, works well for me.
Cheers

Hi Blake,
How long are the leads on these? I’d prefer to mount the unit closer to the trailer rather than on the end of drawbar near to the car…I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Because you can specify the plug, I'm sure you could specify the length of the cables (the cable is not that expensive per metre).
I brought mine about 3 years ago, and they were very helpful via email.
If I plug a trailer with standard incadescent bulbs, I still plug directly into car socket however. Handy to have both options.
