| advantage, if any, of 20" wheels |

Earlier today my wife & I had a test drive in a 2012 MY D4. Have been offered one with 20" wheels. I assume these come with lower profile tyres? What are the advantages/disadvantages of 20" wheels. I have never had anything other than standard wheels on any car. Our car mad son swears by low profiles but he has a Caterham 7 and an Audi RS8.

Tighter handling as less flex/roll in the tyre when cornering, other than that it's just looks I think. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

On road tyres probably, on LTZ's is still nice and soft.
It's mainly cause they look a bit meaner.
Off road you're less likely to pinch a sidewall and split the tyre, as I have found out the expensive way.
Wouldn't change them though  Welcome "Lola"

Disadvantage - not as great tyre choice
Advantage - look better IMO
I had 19's on my D3, glad I went for the 20's
Just replaced all 4 tyres with Pirelli Scorpions this weekend in fact, £200 each  - but 19's are virtually same cost

19" is a bit of an oddball size over in the States with 20's being a more popular choice hence more options coming out for the bigger rim. I've not noticed any difference in regards to ride quality between the 19" or 20", just make sure you are running the correct pressures. Club Exped trailer

My preference is for 19". More rubber & air = smoother ride and more flexibility, therefore more grip in anything other than smooth surfaces. British roads don't really count as smooth. Low profiles exist for track type driving. Does anyone do that in a Discovery?
Also, when D4 last in for service, dealer lent me a RRS with 20". Only done 8k but 3 wheels had been kerbed! d4 HSE

Advantages:
If you think a big 4x4 looks good with low profile tyres.
Marginally better handling, but if you wanted a "sporty" handling vehicle!!!
Negatives:
Expensive tyres
More prone to kerbing damage to rims
More chance of sidewall damage on tyres
Less comfortably ride
Reduced off-road ability
More road noise
Tramlining
Somewhat defeats the point of having one of the worlds best "go anywhere" vehicle when the tyre size restricts this ability.
But each to their own. I drove with 19" rims for over 5 years with no problems on or off road. Recently switched to a set of 18" rims and prefer the ride.
