LR Dealer unable to communicate with ECUs

Hi, I'm both new to the site and Landrover ownership but have been mining this forum for information and have successfully repaired a few faults including the EPB and front end knock, this one however has me a little stumped.

I took my 54 plate V8 petrol to my local dealers to get a software update on the auto box (TSB info from this site, Thanks) Dealers informed me they couldn't communicate with ECUs and have booked in for their "Wiring Specialist" to look at, being technically minded I thought I'd have a look first.

Observations:
1 - No physical damage or corrosion to OBDII port
2 - 12v present at pin 16
3 - MS CAN L to H resistance excessively high (1200 Ohms)
4 - HS CAN L to H resistance excessively high (300 Ohms)

I've reviewed the LR wiring diagrams and the diagnostic port is connected directly to the instrument cluster, so I'd assume any faults would show on the bus and be reported via the message centre although this may not be the case.

My questions are,

1 - Has anyone seen this / fixed this in the past
2 - Are the CAN buses fault tolerant, could there be a "silent" fault on the bus that the IDS is less tolerant of?
3 - Could a good independent with a Faultmate a) update the autobox software b) diagnose this fault as I'd rather pay them than LR
4 - Does the V8 petrol ECU / Can bus protocol differ and would the dealer IDS automatically connect correctly, I only ask this as the dealership tried to sell me a 105K service as "it's really important to get the timing belt done"

I really appreciate the time everyone puts into this forum, has helped me alot already

Regards

Dan

Does SDD communicate with ANY of the modules on the car?

Are the resistance reading being taken with the battery disconnected?
If the car runs and works ok then the CAN BUSs must be working ok.

Also a V8 doesn't have timing belts!

My Padiwan may be a bit busy just now Rolling with laughter so i hope you dont mind me having a go at helping out here.

We have seen this sort of thing quite a few times during development, What worries me is how your dealer is phased by it.

If your CAN BUS was not working as designed and it will overcome bad connections, untwisted sections and even one wire being open circuit, you would not be able to open a door let alone start it. And your instrument packwould resembe a christmas tree. The problem therefore seems only related to diagnostic access to ECU's and for some reason they can get themselves into a situation where they work normally but will not communicate diagnostically.

Unfortunately the dealers IDS / SDD system requires communication with some core ECU's first from which it obtains information about what other systems the vehicle has. If these are the ones not responding it will not go any further.

The trick is to do a hard reset. IE Disconnect both battery leads and short them together for 30 seconds or so. The vehicle side of course, not the battery unless you want a BBQ.

If you LR dealer is stumped...and trying to sell you a 105k service ( due to the importance of changing the belts)...and a V8 doesn't have belts ...I'd suggest you very quickly look elsewhere....
or change the post heading to "LR dealer unable to communicate with customer"....
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Thanks for the replies, I performed a hard reset on the weekend but have no way to determine if it worked, my next step is to test the can bus resistances with the battery disconnected (as suggested), check the continuity between the can bus wires in the diagnostic port and the terrain response switch in the centre console and check earth wire resistance to the battery. I'd have done it today but the rain put me off..

I'm still new to dealers as it's the first "posh" car I've owned so I'll give them one last chance, fingers crossed for Friday.

Regards

Dan

Swansea, eh? Chances are, you'll have been into Stratstones, and as such, your chances of a successful outcome have roughly halved, judging from feedback on that bunch. Good luck or find a decent independent who know which engines have what belts.

Surprisingly BBS Spy was correct, a hard reset sorted out the communication issues, unfortunately the SW update didn't solve the auto box issue. So £90 later and I still have to do a auto box fluid and filter change. I'm really starting to get into this LR ownership. Rolling Eyes

As you are planning on doing the oil and pan I take it you have a gearbox issue
Can I suggest before going down the pan and oil change route you look at the mega flush option by 4 tech I just had it carried out and the car has been brilliant since
Plenty written on here about it

Hope this helps

A hard reset is something any worthy dealer should automatically know about and be able / willing to do without thinking twice.

That yours did not should tell you that you are simply using the wrong dealership.
