Failed main bearing / crankshaft
My TDV6 HSE 2006 suffered engine failure in july with only 72.000 km on the clock.
It started with a loud noise / knock - from the engine while driving on the highway.
No warnings on the display, normal temp. The oil light turned on but only after I had stopped and the engine was idling.
The oil level was fine. The dealer won't speculate what caused the failure, but since the car is outside the 3 year warranty, it is my problem.
Only, I think it is very unnatural that a diesel engine fails this way after only 72.000 km. On this forum I have found 10 similar reports.
It is interesting that only the 2 main bearings in the middle of the crank have failed. Everything else is fine. This invites the theory that one of the main bearings turned in its socket thereby obstructing the oil canal and starving some bits not others.
The main bearing could turn if a main bearing cap is not tight or vibrates etc. Many other causes are possible of course but with oil on the engine, most plausible causes would involve design flaw or manufacturing fault.
Land Rover does not even offer spare bearings to provide a fix. You have to buy a new short engine for thousands of pounds! This is way more expensive than it has to be - so what is the real reason? Land Rover wants to make more money or cover up a design glitch or both? Either way I'm not a happy customer.

If it was sold in the US there would be a class action by now.
The newer engines have a different crankshaft and bearings so LR are aware of the weekness.
Unless someone is willing to risk money on a legal route LR will claim ignorance.
Does not seem consistant as there hare many engines with very high miles/km on them still going strong.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

When was this crankshaft design change done ? I've read about it a couple of times here now, but cant recall seeing a model year or date mentioned.

65 hours billed for the work
They are billing me 65 hours for swapping out the short engine.
Sombody mentioned somewhere that the standard for changing out a short engine was only 25 hours.
Wonder if those 25hrs include other steps required for the job lift boddy, bleed brakes etc etc. ?
Is there a database I could use to figure out if I'm being billed a fair amount of hours?
Help

Maybe they're taking off the body, removing the heads, and then lifting your leg?

Don't you mean lifting their leg. then telling you it's raining? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Sorry about your engine issue frosti. This is quite serious stuff. It is a clear case of design fault.
Is it purely a case of hoping every day that we do not draw the short straw? Or is there a way of telling? Oil tests maybe?

My 56 HSE engine gave up a couple of months ago, it was in the LR garage for new brakes and pads - LR stripped it down and found a failed bearing middle of the crank - told me it was due to a lack of oil have to pay for a new full engine LR need to take account of this

Faulty assembly
A specialist looked at the failed engine block and was surprised to see that 3 out of 4 main bearing caps in the failed engine were not correctly matched to the block.
Instead of being tightly fitted to the block, the caps are 1/2 mm to short, leaving room for potential vibration and wear. Eventually, after 65 000 km a main bearing got enough room to rotate, thereby blocking circulation of oil through the crankshaft and after that burn out the neighboring bearings.
i still have the engine block available if anyone wants it including cylindres, pistons etc in good order apart from 3 main bearings.

Crankshaft failure
Hi does anyone have an idea of what date/model/year they upgraded the bottom end of the engine to prevent the crankshafts failures.

In middle on an engine dismantle and hopefully rebuild- so far it has taken 3 days in the workshop to take the body off, and lift out the engine and take the heads off. Never seen so many components in my life. Not full time days I would add.

Hi Bob,
Any progress on your rebuild? I'm considering doing the same on my failed TDV6. Can't get a TDV6 engine from a trustworthy source for love nor money.
Thanks,
Stuart

Engine now rebuilt- top end only- virtually everything that moves has been replaced. Run up for the first time on Friday 30th and I hope to have her back mid week. £1700 worth of parts alone. None of them individually particularly expensive-just lots of them. eg 36 camshaft cap screws at £3.60 each! And the part that caused the problem -the MY07 infamous oil pump replacement is only £52.
