I always though that, but my last set of Yokohama's had worn evenly, front to back and side to side, with no edge wear, and I hadnt rotated them (they are directional tyres so I couldnt have swapped them side to side anyway)

26K (Miles) on my AT2. Not needed to rotate because they are waring evenly all round. I reckon there's another 10k in them. Thumbs Up

I may be wrong here, but I would think that roundabouts would tend to wear the outer edge on this wheel.

Perhaps a wheel alignment is necessary.

Peter, you're probably right, I should have been more specific. I don't think that I need a re-alignment, but I do think that roundabouts have increased the wear on the n/s front suspension, which is the likely cause of the fact that the inner edge is slightly more worn that the outer edge.

I've just checked with a tread gauge. N/S front : inner edge just below 3mm outer edge just below 4mm. Better than I thought Thumbs Up

Front tyres will always wear faster than rears on a front engined 4X4 (although not much in it on a D3). The reasons are weight distribution, braking, steering and probably others that a more techy bod could explain.

Hi,
I'm just about to replace the rears after 23K miles. They are Continental Cross Contacts and I was thinking this was probably reasonable wear for a 2.5 ton vehicle; then I saw that many others are getting 35K out of theirs. The outside edge of the nearside rear is wearing faster then the rest of the tyre so possibly I need to realign the suspension.
Incidentally, the wheels that were fitted when I bought the car were RRS 19" with 255/50's fitted (107). I thought nothing of it until I saw a comment elsewhere on this site that said LR didn't recommend these tyres; checked the handbook and sure enough they should be 255/55 (111).
So this time I'm replacing with the correct tyre of 255/55.
Another incidentally - the stealer at the last visit commented the rear suspension arm ball joints had slight play - after 80,000 miles; would that cause uneven tyre wear?

Not sure how many kms they would have done as I changed them for GGs with a fair amount of wear left. They had done 40,00kms at the time and my Wranglers only did 30,000kms before they were illegal. Was very happy with them as a road tyre.

Following on from my earlier post, I spoke to LR who confirmed that a D3 should not have 255/50 R19 fitted, nor should it have RRS 19" alloy wheels fitted! Long story shortened, the dealer agreed to replace two of the four tyres with 255/55 R19's, which given the fact that two were legal minimum and the other two were half worn, wasn't a bad deal. So the Continental Cross Contact UHP's did 24,000 miles for the rears and I'm guessing they would have worn by around 30,000 for the fronts. I now have Continental 4x4 Contacts fitted. They make a bit more noise than the UHP's but seem harder wearing.

What a handy thread

Can I ask if anyone's done mega miles on the 'new' General AT's yet in the 19" size ? I'm running the Pirelli ATR's at the moment, currently at 42k miles with ~4-5mm left but a bit thin on the inside edges. I'll be shipping my car to Oz later this year and want it to go on new rubber, so it's either another set of Pirelli's at ~£170 a tyre or the GG's at ~£155 a tyre.

If the GG's are going to last the same as the Pirelli's then I'll take the cheaper option, but if it's only ~30k miles or so then the Pirelli's at £60 a set more are actually the cheaper tyre lifewise, so I'll get another set of those.

I think I am going to try a set of the AT's, (the AT2's were so good it would be rude not to) . I got quoted £115 per tyre so not too bad price wise.

The only others I was pondering on were BF Goodrich, they are meant to get similar wear.
