stearing wheel wobble when braking |
|
I have a disco 4 which has a problem that gievs a wheel wobble when braking the front discs where changed and the wobble disappeared 4k later its back the disco is back in again and landrover say thhey have a problem with stearing racks and bushes at 12k miles i dont see how.
the rear discs are starting to pit and when braking hard the front nose dives and the abs kicks in far to easily looks like i might get it back next week sometime.
has anybody else heard of anything like this.
they also said there is a mod for the rear barkes might have said recall but not sure will have to ask again when the phone to say its not ready again.

Have you considered your driving style might be part of the issue here? Discovery 4 SE Long range fuel tank Kaymar Rear Bar.

Unless he's riding the brake pedal constantly for 4000miles, I'm not sure what he could be doing to induce this?
Don't you think a fault is more likely? (like an out-of-true hub for example)?

My 3.0 steering wheel wobbles under braking and has done so for a long time. It has done 32K kms but the brakes have never been used in anger. I plan to fit 2.7 brakes so if its caused by the discs then I'm not particularly worried, but I suppose I should attempt to get it fixed anyway. Its a shame the dealer is 6 hrs away.

thanks for the replies I will let you know how i get on when I get the disco back from the dealer,
the dealer mentioned there was a fix for the brakes so hope they will sort them.
As for ridding the brakes thats not the problem i am very light on the brakes cant afford to clog it with diesel the price it is.

I have a similar issue on my D4... at speeds over 60kmph, whenever the break pedal is pressed, there is a wobble on the steering wheel.. easily noticeable on good roads but on bad B roads its difficult to notice..
its going to the dealer's workshop on Monday.. hopefully its no biggie!

As a precaution when you get home, it would be a very good idea to loosen the lug nuts a bit, and then use a well made torque wrench to tighten them evenly to spec using a criss-cross tightening pattern sequence. One of the biggest reasons for brake rotor warpage on any vehicle is improper lug nut torque and ham-fisted tightening technique.
I've done this on all of my cars over the years and have never had to replace a rotor due to warpage. Have 190,000 miles on a set of rotors on my wife's daily driver (ceramic brake pads).

Hey Dave,
thanks for the response. I shall do that before I send it off to the dealers on Monday.. I barely have 4000km on the clock! .. hopefully its some small issue. I hate steering issues!
thanks again, I will update this thread when its fixed =)

got the disco back a week after taking to get the wheel wobble under braking sorted.
must have been a costly job its only done 12k miles
new discs and pads front and back all bushes on the front suspension replaced new steering rack (landrover insisted this was changed before the discs)
done a few hundred miles since and all is fine but been here before, at least this time i dont get the nose diving under heavy breaking.
some other mod was done to the rear brakes a s well but landrover where not clear what this was.
good luck

UPDATE -
Got the Disco back last night. I'm happy to report that the problem is sorted out. the tech at the dealers had checked every component of the steering system, bushes, etc but found nothing wrong with any of them.
the problem was a minor imperfection in one of the front discs. The had phased the front discs, cleaned the pads and the problem is gone.
thanks for all the feedback and help guys!
regards,

This problem is most likely caused by a build up of brake dust around the brake pistons. You need to take the caliper off the disk, push the piston out a bit by using the brake pedal (not to far, you don't want the piston coming out completely) and then apply some copper grease (not normal grease or you'll probably kill yourself) and refit.

Is there a TSB for this - I'm having the same but at 15K miles - do you know the TSB number ? Duncan

My D4 was just over 2 months old with 5k on the clock when I had this vibration under braking.
Was in dealer a couple of weeks ago when I had front discs, calipers and pads replaced.
Just now getting concerned if it'll kick back in in a few thousand miles from now.
