Swap or not?
Hi All,
Just bought from Inverness an 05 HSE with fairly shot Pirelli Scorpions on. They are 255/55/19's and the wheels are in excellent condition with the spare being new/unused.
Now to the question/dilemma. We are off to the Pyrenees in Sept doing some off roading so I was wondering if I should swap the wheels n tyres for 18's or fit some AT's/MT's?
I notice that you can't get AT2's in 19 inch which would be my preferred choice but you can get Goodyear MT's.
Suggestions anyone?

The only thing about the Pirelli's are they look too much like road biased tyres for my liking?
Having said that I have only seen them on Tyre Spot sites so may actually be better looking/more aggressive looking in real life. Anyone got any pics with them on a vehicle?

Aggressive tread isn't the holy grail. An AT can do a better job on rock and loose stone and they're still pretty capable in the gloop.

I am going to agree with ND there
You might also find a tyre like the Pirelli ATR will be better in terms of comfort, noise and economy on the not insignificant run down to the Pyrenees (and back)

You've got 19's, you need new tyres anyway, so just go MTR's, they're 8) and work very well Bodsys Brake Bible

Another vote for MTR's. I've just refitted mine after taking them off for a while. Whilst a notable increase in road noise it ain't so bad you lose the enjoyment of driving the D3 and they look 8)
Also agree that the ATR will be better on road situations. I ain't the worlds best offroader but noticed a sizable difference in competance between MTR's and scorpions on slippy rock crawl/slight climbs.
I've a second set of 19" wheels and will be swapping the wranglers for pirelli ATR's at some point.

IMHO, I would have and did have two sets of wheels, one for offroad use that have on suitable tyres (will end up scratched and marked up) and a smart set for everyday use. In your case as your 19" Tyres are at the end of their life it would make more sense to buy off road tyres this time and then maybe look out for a set of road biased tyres later. Most people run MTR's simply because they look good which in itself is a perfectly good reason, too many people forget it's what personaly makes you happy that matters.
