MOT EGR Farce.
My daughter's D3 failed its MOT because of the EGR blanks! The MOT tester noticed the thickness of the EGR blanks under the pipework and concluded that the EGR system was not functioning. To confirm this he removed the cover on the engine and saw that the pipes were not connected. So it failed.
I have hade to buy a set of EGR pipes to connect up to the throttle body and make a thin blanking plate to get it through the MOT even though the MOT tester knows it's still not functioning! It just has to look right! Absolutely ridiculous.

This is the reason why, when I blanked all the D3's over the years I always put the pipes back to make it look like it had not been touched. Also those blanks are on the thick side.

I didn't think they had to remove covers. So he was really was going out of this way!

They don't but can if they suspect something is a miss.

Hope ur good mate
Likewise in using the thin blanking plaste down by the engine block along with leaving the egr pipes in situ , think I sprayed them blank to hide them even more
Hope u don’t mind me adding but had a pressure DTC error , for the life of me can’t remember and found after removing the throttle body and blanked off the ports , I pumped some air in and bubble tested it at the pipe connections
Found leaks on both sides, resolved the leaks and issue went way ,mess back being very responsive
Assume the tester will be looking out for this more on discoveries
Before I forget I also fitted a D4 genuine Map sensor as it had a larger hole so helped reduce/ stop the map sensor from blocking up , along with fitting new large O rings , using some plumbers clear silicone grease on re installation , along with of course removing the old throttle body flap
Convinced the D4 map sensor made the engine more responsive but think that’s just me As always hope none of this comes across in trying to teach u how to suck eggs

Didn’t think they were allowed to remove the covers to be honest. When I blanked mine I only
Blanked the lower end by the Egr itself left the top as is. Good luck seeing them 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

They are allowed to if they have reasonable grounds to check something. The EGR blanking plates on the bottom of the pipes were vey thick so he could see they were blanked. It was because of this he needed to verify the system so took the cover off.
Anyway, all sorted, although I've head that testers are getting more stringent, particularly those due an inspection.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Mine failed on front lower arm bushes when new arms had been fitted 3 months earlier by LR main agent, took it to another MOT tester same afternoon and it passed, no mention of bushes. that was 5 years ago and still on same arms.
Do the same as me take it elsewhere.It can when others can't,

It is unusual for an MOT tester to remove any cover as if they break it or cause any damage they are liable for the repair or replacement, generally if something is suspect they may place an advisory on it

A lot of testers have their pet hit list, one MOT test station near me is noted for advisories or fails on brake pipes when the have the slightest corrosion on them, another place goes for suspension and steering bushes the place I have been using for many years got a new tester and he had a habit of using a long pry bar on suspension bushes tried to fail my vehicle once on the wishbone bushes that had only been fitted 3 weeks prior to the test when pulled up on it he said they must be of faulty manufacture I pointed out that the load it put through them with the bar was many times the weight of the vehicle and he could of caused damage to them mentioned it to the guy who owns the place a few weeks later when I was back there with another vehicle and he said that tester no longer worked there"Never keep up with the Joneses.
