Starter Motor Removal

So.. I'm attempting to upgrade the oil pump on my 2005 D3, I have everything stripped down but for the life of me I can't get the starter motor loose.

I've read the guides on here but I'm beginning to loose the will to live. I've removed the 2 bolts from the back of the starter motor on the transmission housing, the 8mm bolts holding the bracket on and the electrical connection behind the black dust cap. But the starter motor just wont budge ... What am i missing?

I see some talk about a bold through the wheel arch behind the 2 heat shields but for the life of me if it exits I cannot find it.

Is it possible the motor is just stuck and needs help coming loose or am i missing something.

Please help!

Just looking again at the manual.

It refers to 2 retaining bolts after repositioning the fuel cooler. Are these holding the starter in?

Probably the small bolts and bracket need to come off.

Be careful with the small bolts

Part of my issue is I just released I lost an hour trying to find a bolt that doesn't exist it was a 4.4l v8... not exactly the same as my 2.7 tdv6 lol

is it possible it just needs a bit persuasion with a mallet? I was a bit tentative not being sure I got the bolts out.

Put one of the long bolts in a few threads.
Then give it a light tap.

Doesn’t usually need it.

Are you sure you removed the correct rear bolts? Quite easy to be one out. Done it myself

I've not had a chance to have a go yet, but just popped out on my break. This is a picture of the top bolts through the Transmission.

The bottom one is a bit more obvious and that looks right.

Just get a soft mallet and whack the starter, then try the krypton factor test how to juggle out, if you can just move it far enough to get the locking tool in.

This is why years ago I made a crank locking tool that does not need the starter to be removed, its a pig doing it on ground level but easier on ramp.

Flack Thumbs Up

Got it. it was just stuck. bolt in a few turns and a couple of taps with my new dead blow hammer and it's out.

The Jenga to get it out only took 5 minutes... I blew a couple of hours trying to get the motor loose!

As always thanks for help guys.

Censored Just as I was making progress the heads of 2 of the long bolts that go into the oil pump heads snapped off with very little force.

Anyone got any tips on how to remove them?

If it's the ones that go in from below, you could try and grab the shanks just beneath the crank with a grips, and try incremental turns to try and loosen them.

Just be sure you are turning in the right direction.
