Dammit - It's official...I've got the old oil pump fitted |
|
I finally got the endescope down into the right place and confirmed that my D3 does indeed have the original oil pump onboard.
Firstly, I wouldn't mind if some knowledgeable person could double check and confirm my understanding that the pump with designation 'AD' is in fact the older weaker design?
Secondly, I had the cambelts changed 2 years ago but understand that the general logic is that if changing the pump then I may as well change the belts but does that still stand true if they've already been done? Trying to save any pennies I can as this is bad news just before Christmas.
Thirdly and controversially...what about if I just left it? I mean, it's already done 159k likely on this pump so surely it'll be fine right?! I know there have been many failures but no doubt significantly more that didn't right? Yeah yeah, someone tell me it'll all be OK and I don't have to spend a penny!

if (big if) I've understood some of the discussions on this, the most likely time these fail is just after a new belt has been fitted - but not exclusively !
So whilst it might have got this far, and it looks like you've already dodged a bullet, you're surely on borrowed time.
Never done the belts myself but can just one be done or is that false economy ?

Thanks Hardware - I think you're right and already know that I'm going to have to get it done as I don't think I could drive it about knowing there's a ticking time bomb. One of those cases where ignorance would be bliss if I didn't know about it
Interestingly, just rang my local garage asking for a quote and they said they wouldn't do it as it's too big a job!?! Never understand this...I'll be paying by the hour for labour so what difference does it make. Ah well - always on the hunt for a decent garage!
I don't know about only changing 1 belt but my feeling would be to leave things alone where possibly so I'd advocate leaving the back ones considering they're only 2 years old.

My 2005 D3 had the original oil pump on it up to about 210k miles, in roughly 2019. We'd not long had the belts done (had them done for the second time in 2017 I think) but our LR independent hadn't mentioned that it might be worth doing the oil pump and we didn't know any better at that point.
We paid about £880 to have the oil pump replaced with new type, plus new intercooler top hose and screenwash expansion tank all done in the same job.
One thing I'd say is if you do decide to get it done, I'd probably look for a garage that is experienced at working on land rovers / Discos. Preferably a decent LR independent specialist.
Up to you whether you leave the belts or get them replaced too, but may only be another couple of hundred which isn't too bad considering the price of the job normally.

A belt without tensioners should be less than £50.
I wouldn’t bother changing it though. A garage probably would want to.

Mine failed before the first belt change which sucked because i had the new upgraded FOMOCO pump in my shed with the belt kit ready to fit.
I was lucky and was able to do a minor rebuild and after almost 40k klms its still going great.

The front belt has to come off to change the Oil pump anyway, if it was me I would fit a new front belt kit with a new Oil pump plus a new seal and crank bolt, doing just the front belt and pump is around 2.5 - 3 hours for someone who has done them before.
I would leave the rear belt if that was done not long ago.

Thanks Flack - I know from reading many threads that you've done many of these so I'll take your advice....appreciated
I'm going to book in with a Local LR Indy Specialist too....they're highly rated and only deal with LR's so would have done this many times. They already inspired me with confidence as when I called them stating I wanted a quote to replace the oil pump, they immediately told me to ensure that we need a OEM FoMoCo pump with the re-enforcement so they're aware of the issues.
