Tdv6 woes! Egr, front oil seal, blue smoke

Hi guys, wondering if anyone has had this before or could shed some light on it?
Went to start her up the other day, cold start air temp about 4°, was I a bit of a hurry so 'forgot' to wait for the glow plugs, got about 5 seconds of blue smoke drifting past. Hesitant to rev up along with mil light, ah I thought must be those pesky egr valves again (couple of months ago went into limp with the n/s egr at fault, reset the light and the valves went on the to do list, been OK since). Got the scanner out quick (snapon modis) yep egr again, cleared fault and tried the rev range, still hesitant. Disconnected and jumped out to find a big puddle of oil under the car. Got all the covers off and found its coming from the front crank seal, had my covers off a few weeks ago to check the oil pump type (thankfully the strengthened one) and there was no sign of a leak. When run up it's running out at quite a rate.

Sorry for the long post, has anyone had this?

Paul

This much after about 3-4mins of running!

Removed, as gratuitous example of complete ignorance.

Err no...

A crankcase is the housing for the crankshaft in a reciprocating internal combustion engine. The enclosure forms the largest cavity in the engine and is located below the cylinder(s), which in a multicylinder engine is usually integrated into one or several cylinder blocks.

Thumbs Up

Err OK then, let's try again, crank seals I've done before have only ever been seeping oil, this one being my own has to be different!! Can't see pump pressure normally being behind the crank seal.

Thanks for the quick replys, I was hoping for some constructive feedback or previous experiences though.

Xdandy, ignorant, how? I'm just stating the conditions of failure and asking if anyone has advice.

Cfb, thanks for the heads up on the block construction 😀

Laughing Sorry Springy, I was replying to XDandy who asked if it could relate to a blocked breather issue on the front differential but as he has now removed his comment my post is now pointless (some may say what's new Smile )

Sorry I can't be more help, hope you get it sorted (and the block paving!!)

Thanks cbf, did think high crankcase pressure forcing the oil out but removing the oil cap doesn't seem to make a difference to the flow rate.

Its been taken to an independent specialist to have a look, bit downhearted as it's the first time I've conceded and sent one of my own to someone else!!

Drive should be OK after a few washes!!

There's quite a few posts on here about leaking crankshaft oil seals though usually after having changed the pump and either fitted OEM or fitted incorrectly. Worth doing a search on "crank seal" and having a read if you haven't already done so. Hope you get it sorted.

Yikes,

Just reread it. Sorry, was referring to my ignorance.

When I read the title about oil seal, I’d asked if “crank seal” was the same as front diff seal and posted a link to

https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...b00245.pdf

Took CFB to point out I’d gotten it completely wrong, so removed the post in what was supposed to be a mildly amusing self deprecating way, highlighting my own lack of knowledge.

Was not directed at you at, and apologies for giving that impression.

Poor excuse, but it’s been a long day.

Yeah as Mike said.

Replace with a genuine LR one.

Need to remove the cambelt.
Pulley.
and replace the seal. (and wait overnight for the seal to seat before starting)

If its done over 100K miles you may as well put a genuine new oil pump on from advanced factors.
to ensure good oil pressure, and after taking it all apart!

Maybe new belt kit too if not been done recently?

Ouch
Not wanting to be negatively posting but my 57 90 X's looked the same 3 weeks ago when it melted number 1 and 2 piston in the middle lane of the A1 whilst passing an HGV
managed to get to the hard shoulder oil all over and I thought it's a seal or hose gone,no such luck
Top it all the lad was driving it
Hope it's the crank seal mate

Thanks so far guys, no worries Xdandy, done plenty of front seals (different makes) and never seen one leaking that bad. Done the timing belt 6 months ago and all was well, the pump was replaced by a previous owner as it fell within the range of the dodgy pumps, I assume by dealer.

She's back and all good, no idea what made the seal fail, now have a couple of shiny egrs and a genuine seal 😀 hopefully she'll behave for the next couple of years!! Big drive in the summer so she'll need to be flawless!!
