Oil Filter Question

I have the tdv6 oil filter in front of me, on closer inspection I see the little pipe coming off the filter the one with the O-ring is closed off. What is the purpose off the little pipe, a locator. I think maybe the filter spins.

yes it is.

looks like a little nipple with an oring on it to seal
locates it into the filter housing.

Does it have two oil filters like the older Disco engines. I was in the local dealer where the owner was complaining about having two oil filters but they only changed one in the service. Apparently one was a filter insert and the other was a cartridge type.

by older disco engines you mean the Disco 2 TD5 "storm" engine.....it did have two.......a normal cartridge type & a centrifugal one.....at the time of Disco 2 launch this was an innovation that allowed longer oil change intervals....it didn't make it to the D3.
 BREXIT - done properly.

Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Yes, earlier TD5 engines have 2 oil filters
ERR6299 which is a centrifugal spinner...Gets changed every 12,000 miles
LPX100590 which is a standard spin-on filter...which is changed every 36,000 miles

i seem to remember hearing that when BMW developed the engine it just had the centrifugal filter but when Land Rover had the engine their engineers said "that's the filter !! no, we'll add another one to that please"...

or maybe i was dreaming Shocked
