Grinding/scraping sound

I seem to be getting a metallic scraping sound when either lifting off the accelerator or constantly cruising at 50mph+.

Recently I tried Dr.tranny with thanks to a member on here with the hope it would relieve my juddering and bouncing Rev needle until I could do a full flus early next year. This is has but the metallic scraping sound has been there all along!

My juddering is also slowly coming back too, mainly in 3rd and 4th gear however my Rev counter is not jumping.

I've been told that it may be the torque converter but having owned the vehicle for less than a month, I'm not too sure on what it could be!

Has any one had anything similar? It's fairly hard to explain so if I have missed something important out then so ask!

Thanks in advance and merry Christmas all! 8)

I can also get this scraping sound repeating itself after every one-two seconds when cruising below 40/50mph too!!

Could be separate issues. With car suspension raised and a jack under chasis rail , try knocking the exhaust and floor panel protectors wigh wooden mallet, with engine running. You are looking for anything that is loose and rattles. Better to dismiss something simple and cheap first.

Hi ,

Thanks for that. I see you have had a new torque converter. What were the symptoms and what made you get another?

Metal heat shield bent a little too close to the prop shaft?

As robbie and barn1e said, start with the simple things that could be giving that metallic rattling noise, get underneath and knock the heat shields and anything that you suspect could be rattling and giving that noise rather than shelling out for bits and pieces that maybe are not needed.

Seeing as you've only had the vehicle for a month or so do you have any history with it, regarding parts or advisories on old mots for similar issues?

Thanks for yor replies. I will have to give it all a try tomorrow, weather permitting of course!!

I have a horrible feeling it is something mechanical, I just get that feeling!

There is a decent amount of history and repair bills. No advisories on the MOT and a Land Rover service history. Thought I had a sound beast!! :p

If it does turn out to be something mechanical (verified by an indy or land rover) might be worth paying for the Health check thing or PDI from land rover, costs you a couple of hours labour but will highlight anything that's been overlooked by the previous seller as a problem.

Did you buy it privately or from a dealer/garage?

I have a similar thing. Most prominent at 35 mph. Which gear your in makes no difference. Always sounds a little louder under load. Two garages have looked one being a specialist and could find nothing wrong. Main concern is it being a damaged crown wheel in the front diff butit maybe a damaged uj front prop. However ive just noticed a little disc judder under braking. Be a bit disappointing if it is major failure at 64k miles

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated!

It sounds more mechanical than anything but I will definitely check for simple solutions tomorrow! Every time I come off the throttle when accellerating for more than 5 seconds (approx) it will hake this grinding sound for about a second.

It will then be a recurring (pulsing) scraping when accelerating in a particular fashion. Not all the time however. It's very frustrating!!

And don't start me on judder, it's just coming back! Sad

It was basically the judder that you will find lots of details about on here. Best advice is to catch it early and have a flush of the ATF Leave it and you may need a new TC. Dr Tranny additive buys you time. Geoff. a sponsor on here may be your closest for the flush.

Hi Buddy, mine is doing exactly the same, bought the bus back in feb had an issue with hi /low ratio ended up putting a replacement transfer box on for that issue (clutch had shook a six) now im experiencing this lost drive issue occasionally, sounds bad just like a ducati clutch basket if you have ever heard one, anyway, nothing has come up on diagnostics electronically, local guy had contacted autologic they suggested hydraulic or mechanical, I feel mechanical can be nearly eliminated as its intermittent and then runs fine, with no frequency to it at all, just as it fancies!!, changed all the linkage as many posts on the selector, no resolve so checked autobox oil level, somehow had about 2.5liters too much in, no other system found to be adding to it as other levels had not dropped as yet, problem still present. my thoughts now are mega flush and DR Tranny, then see from their. sound like yours?/ or anyone else have anything to suggest??? Cheers.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I don't loose any power and it doesn't drive any differently. The car just emits a short scrape when coming off the accelerator. It seem to constantly scrape above 50/60mph when cruising.
