Defender side box finally mounted!

Finally got round to mounted my side box. Used unwin rails to mount it up and then bent some flat Ali strip as the joining mounting bars.

Thought I'd share it in case anyone else wanted to do it.

That’s really cool. Was that a pricey mod?

The box was 340 delivered and painted Tonga Green. All the metal and unwin rails come to 120 and paint and bolts/rivnuts etc 80. So just over 500 done but it took me around 5 hours from start to finish to bend the Ali too.

You can probably order the box from the dealer. There are a few listed on my local classifieds for $500-750.

the box is a valiable from a dealer but to be honest it is a rip off - this is why i have only just done it. the box is from ebay and only cost £240. (i had to paint it but the quality is pretty good for a 'import part' to be fair.

How (if at all) is the lower part of the bracket fixed to the car ? Can't make out from the images if you've bolted it to the car or its just resting on the upper wing...
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

i mounted it just under the window on the body panel - it has 3m VHB tape on the back of the unwin rail and then 6no M8 stainless panel rivnuts - i painted the holes and also the rivnuts when i mounted it up to stop cross metalic corrosion etc.

its not going to hold heavy weights but then i didn't install it for weigth, more as a useful carrier and also the fact that i have always thought it would look pukka on a D3

Looks a good job well done.👍

Reckon the Defender chequer plate panels on the bonnet would look good on your D3 too.
I made my own out of chequer rubber matting, secured it to the bonnet by 3m double sided tape.
Been on now for two years and still holding up.

Modifications

Some cracking modifications there Bow down I am interested to know more about mounting the spare on the tailgate and how it opens. Did you use a spare wheel carrier bracket from the Disco series 1 and 2 ? and can you still open the top half enough to reach the lower tailgate release button ? Would appreciate a steer.

@ sankeytrailer. Does not work that way….

Spare wheel holder is mounted on the bumper…

With a “ hinge” or better: 2 bearings.. locked with a clamp..
to open the rear, you have to swing it out of the way first..

On the picture you see a rasta… but there are others, seperate OR integrated in a steel bumper …
 Best regards
Harold
