There are only three countries that use non-metric and of those, the Yanks actually do use metric they just convert it to US Customary system.

And for those that remind us that the UK uses Imperial measurements still in some circumstances, they are all based on the metric equivalent (thanks to the Weights and Measures Act) 1985.

Well I for one know far it is to all my regular destinations in miles, I know how few miles to the gallon my D3 does Crying or Very sad I know how tall I am in feet and inches, I know how much I weigh in pounds and stones and know the size of my feet in regular sizes … who else falls into this category? I am a 37yo millennial. In my head I measure distance driven in miles but distance ran (for fun) in kilometers. I know my weight in kilograms. I order my shoes off the internet so usually have to order in EU sizes. My D3 V8 is an Aussie import so tells me my fuel economy in km/100l but I have to covert it to mpg so I can put it in perspective!

I am currently on an oil rig (off Aberdeen) where we are measuring lengths in decimal feet of all things!! But we use millimeters for fine measurements rather than decimal inches or fractions of inches. But we do measure diameters of pipe in fractions of inches... But that's all because it's an American industry.

When we announced the births of our kids I told all the boomer grandparents, aunts and uncles the babies' weights in kilograms just to annoy them. Twisted Evil

I am sure that the Mail faithful will lap it up, but it is utter nonsense.

Quote:
An EU directive, which took effect in 2006, required the use of an EU-wide "CE" mark which stands for Conformité Européenne - French for "European Conformity".

CE appears on many other products, from toys to medical devices, and it shows that they meet the EU's safety, health and environmental rules and can move freely across its countries with no additional checks.

But the European Commission has rejected the idea that EU rules stopped the UK from having the crown stamp on glasses as well.

A spokesperson told us: "EU law does not prevent markings from being placed on products, so long as it does not overlap or be confused with the CE mark."

I'm 51 and was born 6 days after Decimal Day. I use metric and imperial equally happily. I use metric and imperial on site - increasingly I get a funny look if I ask "is that a 6 by 2 up there?", "No, mate, it's a 150x50". Still some older guys about on sites that use imperial but most now are fully metric. I know my weight in imperial and metric (it's too much in both cases!), my height in both, my shoe size in UK and EU systems. I use metric when cooking except where spoon measures are given. I use google to convert cups to metric if following a Yank recipe.

Same with the lie about passport colours, of course. DM and others routinely lie to their readers about such things. Shame there isn't a press watchdog that isn't itself run by the press barons.

Indeed.

What's even more frightening is the fact that (last time I checked) the DM has the highest circulation inc. online. Shocked

Snap, albeit about seven weeks earlier. I was recently quite shocked to find a tape-measure I had purchased only had metric markings. There are times when being able to divide by 2, 3, 4 or 6 is easier than dividing by just 2 or 5. Mind you, I also have a tape-measure marked in 'hands'! Shouldn't it be "No, Sir, it's a 150x50"?

Now talking about beer glasses is that a pint to brim glass or an oversize pint glass. There was a serious discussion some years ago wether a pint of beer should include the beer head or not. Can not remember the exact conclusion but the amount of beer head that drinkers like vary around the U.K.

Currently am drinking a 330ml can of local beer from a ‘pint’ glass which does not have a CE mark, nor a Crown mark, nor a pint level mark. The only marking on it is Otter Creek as it is an American beer glass. Putting it bluntly all I am concerned about is the taste and quality of the beer inside the glass.

Cheers, folk as I drink this rather nice Darkland Brewery beer

The size of the glass only matters if you're paying for a given amount and using the glass as the measure in a licenced premises. But as you say, the depth of the head on some beers will vary significantly depending on where you are in the UK. As someone that drinks cider, it's not a problem for me - fill to the brim for me, thanks. Thumbs Up

If we are up for decimalising everything then why haven’t we decimalised time? After all is a pretty bad way of structuring the day I mean 24 hours? Whoever thought of that ? And how come the year is 365.25 days long? they tried to hide the fact that they can’t even get that right by throwing in an extra day every four years! Laughing

Let’s a keep a year as it is but have 10 months instead of 12.. after all it was the Romans that added in July and August as a matter of vanity.. and I live in Scotland so losing these two months won’t make the slightest difference as the weather will be just the same, cold wet and windy… just maybe slightly warmer Laughing

Every month (36.525 days as it currently is) will have 10 weeks thereby giving us 3.65 days per week (or 7 days every two weeks…) Laughing so you get 10 weekends per month! Thumbs Up every week would equal 73.56 hours Every day would have 10 hours, (or 7.35 of todays hours so two new days would be very close to one current day)reducing the space needed on watches and digital displays… brilliant! And every hour would have 100 minutes and every minute would have 100 seconds would make working out wages childsplay!

A huge benefit would be that we could keep the current speed limits on the roads as 1 hour would be 73.5 minutes of todays time so very similar, interest payments on mortgages would only have to be made 10 times a year rather than 12 and you’d get 1.5 days off after every three days Bargain Rolling with laughter

So who’s with me? Whistle
