Best method(s) to test disco 3 turbo?

Hi all,

New to Discovery 3's so sorry if this is a silly question.

I just bought a discovery 3, before I bought it, I asked the chaps to blank off the EGR's and remove the butterfly flaps, I watched this happen, it was done correctly/well. The chaps have taken the car into a garage today to get the EGRs mapped/do a remapping.

Before they did both of these things, the car was cutting out under stress, not sure if it was when the turbo was kicking in but it was when the car was going fast or uphill, the harder the workload the more often it cut out.

So, I am due to collect the car this evening to test drive it and from what I can see the primary cause of cutouts under stress seem to be the turbo, either the actuator arm sticking or gunking up the internals, chaps said they checked the actuator arm and it moved freely and I am planning on using wynns turbo cleaner for the first 5 tank refills, question is, how best to test this turbo comprehensively to ensure it's fine, about to go on a journey through europe so want to be sure the car will handle the drive?

thanks in advance, dronearm.

Hi and welcome.

Doubt you have a turbo issue, more like a fuel supply problem. (LPFP in the tank and or the fuel filter) Diagnostic codes will point the way, and there's reams and reams written on here regarding fuel supply issues.

Get yourself a decent diagnostic tool GAP IID for example, you're going to need it and it can in many cases get you out of trouble.
If you can get codes post them here! Thumbs Up

EGR remapping?😕

Autel ap200 in white is worth a look.
Can be hit and miss. But for that budget, worth having

Fuel additive for 5 tanks is very excessive,’if you consider the turbo is free to move anyway.

I can't recommend anything for that budget. Try and stretch to a decent tool, it will pay you back many time's over.

Could it be turbo hoses collapsing and cutting off air supply?

It was/is the turbo, I put two bottles of wynns turbo cleaner in 1/4 a tank of diesel and thrashed it in manual gears, kept the gears in 3rd gear and kept thrashing it and couldn't get the car to cut out the way it was, had one cut out right at the start but after that, a good 20 miles without issue.

turbo was blocked with carbon it seems, so problem solved, going to try without the wynns tomorrow and normal diesel as opposed to premium I used today to make sure 👍

Well I hope you have found your issue.
But please do follow wynns manufactures instructions. Over consintration could damage other parts.

You will need a fault code reader if you are going on a road trip.
