You will receive differing opinions.
Personally, I have successfully used VR when LR seals were unobtainable.
Flack has reported using 1000s of uses with only 1 failure. His first attempt, which he blames on himself.
Another very experienced user, Disco Mikey, has reported a number of failures, which he put down to a bad batch. Consequently he has said that he is not prepared to take the risk of using them again.
Given the amount of time taken to do the job, the cost of other parts and the extra cost of having to redo it, I can agree with those who recommend spending extra on a genuine LR seal. Best to buy it from a reliable source, not eBay.
If you cannot obtain one, the VR seal is usable and worth purchasing just to obtain the included tool.
Regardless of which seal you use, install it dry without any lubrication at all. Search on this site for other guides.

IMHO, the VR “tool” does only work with the factory fitted seal..
Since it is as sharp as the crankshaft…so to fit a seal to that “tool” yourself, the stress in the lip will be the same as if you put it straight on the crankshaft…
The Jag/lr tool is conical shaped, so you can ease the stress on the lip as much as possible…..
It is a hard teflon lip..Best regards
Harold

Motolab, my experience of the VR tool differs from yours.
The tool that I have used is rounded. The seal is eased on to a slight taper to a cylindrical section, which fits over the crankshaft. The seal is temporarily stretched to a larger diameter than the crankshaft and, as it is slow to recover it's original size, slips easily up to the oil pump. In fact it could catch out anybody expecting any resistance.
VR have to fit their seal on the tool.
Photos of the VR seal being used to fit a LR seal were posted in 2016. I'll try to find a link.

I used an Elring seal as the VR and LR were out of stock at the time, 18 months on no issues.

I have used the VR insertion tool many times with genuine seals without any issue.
You do have to take your time and be very careful with these seals they get damaged very easily.
I wonder if anybody has used a normal type oil seal before?Andrew

700 miles in using Genuine LR seal and home made tool
Once on the shaft, be sure to check behind the seal that the lip (seal) that projects forwards (towards the oil pump) is not folded back on itself.
