Less fuel = less emissions, so if the tuner can make it drive better/more grunt hes giving it more fuel.
I have seen many so called amazing fuel savers on trucks over the last 30 years from magnets to lpg/cng, none lasted the course.
Were you using the trip computer to work out fuel economy?
But if you are happy/convinced then thats all that matters.

Remaps do work. I had a Mercedes’ Benz C-class sportcoupe a long time ago (early 2000s) and the C180, C200 and C230 models had the same engine only with a different firmware.

Hi
Yes did use trip computer but only along with cross reference to brim to brim calcs. Both my Discovery’s computers have proven accurate but even after many validations I’d never trust it blindly, things can change. Brim to brim pretty much can’t lie although my D4’s anti-siphon/misfuelling device makes it a bit trickier.
Early days I thought I was getting big gains but I realised I was absolutely driving to maximise. Once normal service resumed, and I settled into enjoying the additional driveability (not aggressively so) I did settle at around +2mpg.
I suspect the reason that results are mixed is that some get used to enjoying the extra pick up just a bit too much Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

doing 21.44mpg with trigger towing all day, not bad for an engine that's done 500k+

To answer the original question, yes, I can beat that - substantially.
& no, not by remapping, just by cruising at an economical speed. That was a long time ago, in a manual D3, with the range showing after having driven 92 miles. From memory, the cruise speed would have been 65.

So in my view, mapping not necessary. Speed, pointless carried weight, tyre pressures, temperature, attention to maintenance - brakes, bearings, fluids etc, and awareness of driving style are the main factors.
And importantly, as said, a D3/D4 is not an eco machine in the fuel consumption sense. It's a unique multi purpose go anywhere vehicle, that can achieve acceptable economy 'for what it is doing'
The current D4 however, doesn't get anywhere remotely close to those figures. But it's a heck of a lot quicker Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Adam - can you tell us who did the remap for you please? [figures are impressive!]
Hi Ivan, the remap was from ss4x4performance
They’re based in Peterborough if memory serves me correctly.
Total cost was £438.00 inc VAT, £100 of that was travel and diagnostic checks.

Apologies for not responding to this last year, I’d sort of forgotten.
I took her up to Scotland in November starting from Suffolk with a full tank of fuel. 450m there, and did not have to refuel until Carlisle on the return journey.
Your comments regarding driving style are correct, I have adjusted mine to suit since the remap and I can still comfortably achieve 30mpg on a motorway journey at 70mph.
All in all, I’m firmly on the side of worth it for remaps12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

One of my jobs today is to choose a map file from a supplier & then program the D3.
Its got to be a cheaper map not one from say BAS.
Has anyone had any good results from specific suppliers.

Yes but thats for power not economy.
Lots of car cos do the same one engine for several power ratings, weirdly they dont seem to offer one with same engine yet different mpg ratings, or do they?

I think we’ve had 100+ years of advertisements for performance. Buyers (mostly) want to buy that.

I went for the stage 1 over the eco / drivability version after talking to them re what I will be doing.
For personal use with little heavy towing I might have gone for the other map.
The mapping went really easy & you can feel the results in more power but more importantly the power is much lower down the rev range with it noticeably coming in around 1500 rpm rather than 2000+ pre map.
You can change up sooner & hold higher gears at lower speeds.
Only driven locally so far but doing a 3hour + drive tonight with an empty trailer & tomorrow night coming back towing about 2t. So we shall see how it goes. After that its main job will be towing 3.5t.
