Is this the end of a 10 year love affair?

Hi everyone,

Just got back from a holiday on the Isle of Wight and despite it pouring with rain all the time, really enjoyed it - even socially distanced!

Anyway, my 05 D3 HSE has 245k miles on the clock, has been well looked after and serviced, and a couple of years ago I had the torque converter replaced as I had the usual juddering when accelerating up hill or pulling a load behind. Combined with a full service, cam belt replacement and the TC it cost a lot of money!

This week away has seen my D3 starting to judder again, and the acceleration is also really dull/blunted.

Given that my D3 is likely worth very little now, I am starting to think that a gearbox rebuild and a new TC is uneconomical (or a recon box and TC).

Has anyone come to this cross roads and can offer any advice?

Has anyone had a gearbox rebuild and TC and mind sharing the cost?

I love my D3 and have probably spent as much on keeping it going than what I paid for it, but I can’t help thinking that it’s time to move on, although, unlikely that I will get another Disco as the new ones are just too expensive for me!

Dilemma!

Cheers, Mark.

Just my point of view:

Does it matter to you that you’ve spent more than what it’s worth in the UK?

If you’re looking at it as an investment, well, you’re never going to be profitable or break even on it.

If you’re looking at it as a tool I think there are cheaper [to maintain] vehicles to have around.

If you’re looking at it like a hobby, as I do, it means spending less money on something else but at least you’re having fun... and learning to diagnose and fix new interfering things Whistle Whistle

Finally, what would you replace it with if you got rid of it?

What I should have done. Got the box reconditioned and the engine died a few thousand miles later. Hey ho, it’s only money and you can’t take it with you. Thumbs Up

We've just put a new engine and gearbox into a customers 07 D3. Cost was a smidge over £10.5k.

His logic, he knows the car, its history and he likes it. He could buy another, and 6 months later, it lunches itself again...

Much the same with a 3.0 Sport. Another £10k for a new engine (and other work) because he likes the car, and the interior/exterior combo

And then we get onto my own D3 Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed
Admittedly, its a proper one off car now, but still Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

If you like the car, then cost is largely irrelevant, IMO

My D3s done 180000+ spent thousands. All new air bag and struts, height sensors a couple of hundred mile ago. All belts last year all breaks. Jesus that much forgot it all.
It’s a labour of love. I darnt add up the cash, but I know the car inside out.
Bought an engine 2 years ago. Slowly fully reconditioned it and got a good second hand box and TC in case.
There no fun like disco fun. So enjoy it.

Big thing would be to think if you bought a comparable car 2 years ago what would it be worth now after depreciation and running costs plus finance etc, then compare with how little you have spent to keep your great vehicle on the road. That exercise always puts a big smile on my face...
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

First step is to find out what is actually wrong? Could actually be something unrelated. To me it sounds like there are two main issues;

first - lack of power: this needs to be identified, as could be something very simple. EGR valves? Turbo actuator? MAF sensor? split intercooler hose? etc. Cost to fix could be as low as 2p...

Then consider what effect that would have to amplify any potential TC issues.

Only then consider the cost of maintain v replace components v euthanizing it.
Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

Might be worth checking your handbrake shoes aren't the cause of the drag, I only mention this because it was the problem I had, but becuase it had built up over time I just didn't notice, I had new rear discs and handbrake shoes fitted last week because one of the shoes had flipped and was dragging all the time and had scored the disc, I couldn't believe the difference in accelaration and how far the car coasts after it was done, It also radically changed the mpg.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply.

I shall ask my Indy to take a look at the disco, and I have used Dr Tranny before, and it did reduce the symptoms for about 5 months, but they eventually returned.

I will go from there, and if the bill is likely to be thousands, then I will reluctantly be saying goodbye to her. The reality is that I don’t need to tow or do long journeys any more and am not an off roader, and have felt the D3 is also starting to feel uncomfortable to drive for extended periods now also.

5 hand brake assemblies later, many whee bearings, upper wish bones, many many many tyres, two alternators, two batteries and loads of little jobs (including an interior leak that left 1” water under the carpets), you can see I have never given in and always had her repaired, but maybe it’s time for a graceful retirement!

Anyway, let’s see what my Indy says.

Thanks again. Mark.

Hi Mark, I'm getting a judder odd time going uphill. What did you do in the end? Thanks. Dave
Have just bought my 4th Disco. 2 x TD5, 1 x D3 2005>2009 and now my latest 2005 D3. 130,000 on the clock and going as smooth as the day it was born.
