Timing belt tensioner broken off. Diesel in sump pan.
Just bought a Discovery 3 2.7tdv6 with timing belt tensioner broken off, so am stripping engine to diagnose.
When I drained the oil sump pan, there was only about 2 or 3 litres that came out and it was very thin and diesel contaminated.
How do you think so much diesel could have entered the sump?
Just from cranking to try and start for ages ?

Very possibly - with the tensioner broken there will be major damage to the heads, cams, valves and pistons and possibly the conrods etc - so any fuel being pushed in via the injectors could just run down into the sump through holes in the pistons.

The injectors themselves will be damaged allowing fuel to be pumped direct into the cylinders. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

not impossible, but unlikely I would think.
Did they fit DPFs downunder ?
