Engine "out" without body off |
|
Anyone done it? I know it can be done, albeit with a lot of foul language but could do with hearing from anyone that's done it;
As it happens, I don't need the engine out altogether - I need to take the crossover pipe off so I can weld new flexys in, replace the missing brackets for it and also have the rear belt to do and I'm wondering if my plan would work or if I'm better off just getting on with it and removing the engine
What I've got in mind so far is to take both prop shafts off of the transfer box (but not the diffs) and tie them out of the way. Take the earth strap, gear linkages and wiring off the gearbox. Remove the crossbeam and support the gearbox on a trolley jack on a wheeled cart/tray sort of thing I have.
Remove the fan, cowl and possibly lots of front stuff including the radiators. Then the engine mounts (engine now on engine crane). The goal being to wheel the whole lot forward a foot - 18 inches to gain access to the fuel pump belt and top of the bell housing (the Muppet who did my clutch didn't reconnect the breather pipes and just left them flapping in the breeze up the back of the engine, he also threw the c.o.p brackets away so I'm trying to kill a few birds with one stone)
I'd rather not split the engine/gearbox if I can help it because I need to sort the breather pipes kinda in-situ but if that's the easiest way then so be it
Just after thoughts really, anyone got a better idea? I have just about everything a fully equipped workshop has, just no ramp so body off isn't an option unfortunately

Engine out with body on has been done before and somewhere on this site is the write up. Someone may have a link.

sounds like a lot of extra work, when you could just remove the gearbox

Can you get at the "timing" belt fairly easily with the gearbox out Pete?
I don't particularly like the idea after the trouble I had getting my td5's gearbox back on but, considering the sheer amount of stuff I'd need to take apart to do it my way, I'm all ears

its crossed my mind, seems the option with the most potential for disaster though - if I knew someone I could borrow a forklift from, i'd be tempted

you would need long arms to reach the belt, but it would certainly be worth a look/go while the box was out

What about removing engine and gearbox?
A lot of weight for the crane to lift, so need smooth level concrete to work on, but overall I would say and easier job. Chris

The concern there would be getting everything out over the front axle, through the transmission tunnel. As well as whether the crane could lift it - it's a 1ton crane but the further out, the less it'll lift, 250kg at full stretch iirc.
I'm leaning towards the gearbox idea and I'll just have to do what I can with the belt, I can't see any of it being much fun either way

It’s funny I’ve come across this post - I’m at the EXACT crossroads that your experiencing.
My belts are due and my crossover pipe is blowing. I cannot decide which option is best. I cannot justify a body off cost on a 200K+ Disco. Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

Plenty / most people do the rear belt by sticking their hand down the rear of the engine.
There is even a video by LR Time.
Ok it’s not fun, but what job on a disco is!
My biggest worry about pulling the drive gear forward 18” would be safety.
You have pulled it forward and then you want to get under it and work on it or close to it.

I can't understand the concern about the rear timing belt, fiddly time consuming but if I can do it on a D4 a D3 should not present any concern for an experienced DIYer. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I can't be much help regarding the cross over pipe but I did replace the rear belt on my D4 with the engine in situ, it is more difficult than the D3 as its timed. Its quite tight to get to, my advice would be to tie any tools you need to your wrist, if you drop one you may never see it again.
